New York is easier to explore by grouping sights than by crossing Manhattan repeatedly. Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum fit one area, while the 9/11 Memorial and ferries belong to a downtown day. Newark Liberty International Airport is across the Hudson in New Jersey, a detail that matters when choosing a hotel. Visitors may be visiting relatives or attending meetings as well as sightseeing. Check the airport named on every onward ticket because the region has several major airports.
Midtown near Penn Station is convenient for the Newark rail approach, while a Lower Manhattan hotel may need another subway leg. Newark Airport’s rail station is not Newark Penn Station: AirTrain first connects the terminals with the airport station, where NJ Transit trains continue towards New York Penn. Read the full station name when buying the ticket.
A stay with relatives in New Jersey may favour a different route altogether, so a Manhattan transfer is not automatically useful. Air India checks in at Terminal B, while United uses several Newark terminals depending on the flight. For sightseeing, combine the Metropolitan Museum with Central Park’s eastern side, and give Harlem’s Studio Museum its own northern outing. The 9/11 Memorial and Statue of Liberty ferry departures belong downtown. A Liberty Island visit requires the authorised ferry service and security screening, making it a scheduled activity rather than a casual harbour crossing. Newark and JFK are on opposite sides of the metropolitan area, so a change of airport requires a separate ground-transfer plan.
April to June or September to October, about 10–25°C, for walking.
By Air: Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is about 25 km from Midtown Manhattan; AirTrain plus NJ Transit commonly takes 35–50 minutes to New York Penn Station. Buses and taxis also operate.
By Rail: New York Penn Station has NJ Transit airport connections, Amtrak and subway links.
By Road: Airport buses and taxis cross from New Jersey into Manhattan; intercity coaches use Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Walk through Central Park.
See art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Visit the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan.
Cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot.
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Air India uses Newark Terminal B, with check-in on Level 3. United operates from Terminals A, B and C according to the service, so a connecting booking can involve a terminal change.
Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.
Take a ferry from the Gateway of India to the rock-cut Elephanta Caves.
Spend a morning in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and the galleries of Kala Ghoda.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
