June 2025: The final 76 km of the Samruddhi Mahamarg between Igatpuri and Amane near Thane opened on 5 June 2025, completing the 701 km expressway to Nagpur and bypassing the Kasara Ghat.
October 2025: The Aqua Line (Metro Line 3) opened its last section to Cuffe Parade to passengers on 9 October 2025. The fully underground line now runs from Aarey through both airport terminals, Bandra Kurla Complex, Worli and Churchgate to the southern tip of the city.
December 2025: Navi Mumbai International Airport began commercial flights on 25 December 2025, with IndiGo, Akasa Air, Air India Express and Star Air among the first airlines. For travellers bound for Navi Mumbai, Panvel or the Pune road it can be closer than the Santacruz airport.
Tips for travellers
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. How to reach Mumbai
By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Tips for travellers
Hotels in the centre around Thampanoor and East Fort are close to the railway station and the temple, while Kovalam, about 16 km south, suits a beach stay. KSRTC runs city circular buses, and app cabs and auto-rickshaws cover most trips; there is no metro. The two airport terminals are on opposite sides of the runway and reached by different roads, so confirm yours before setting out. Varkala is on the main railway line north of the city, so its cliffs can be reached by train, and Kanyakumari, about 90 km south, makes a long day trip by road or rail.
The Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple admits only Hindus and keeps a strict dress code: men wear a mundu or dhoti without a shirt, and women wear a saree or a long skirt, and a dhoti can be hired near the gates. Phones and cameras must be deposited before entry. The Attukal Pongala, usually in February or March, brings huge numbers of women into the city to cook offerings along the roads, and traffic stops across the centre for the day. The south-west monsoon lasts from June to September, with a second rainy spell in October and November; December to February is the driest season. Onam, in August or September, is marked by a week of state celebrations and lit-up streets.
