Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.

Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Jalandhar is among the oldest cities in Punjab and the commercial centre of the Doaba, the fertile land between the Beas and the Sutlej. Its workshops make a large share of India's sports goods, from cricket bats to footballs, as well as hand tools, leather and rubber goods. Money sent home by the region's large diaspora in Canada, the United Kingdom and elsewhere shapes its housing and shopping streets. Visitors come for the Devi Talab Mandir, the Pushpa Gujral Science City and trips between Amritsar and the hills.
Model Town, the Nakodar road and the area near the bus stand suit a short stay. Auto-rickshaws and app cabs cover the city. The airport at Adampur, about 28 km away, has only a few daily flights, so many travellers use Amritsar airport, about 80 km west, which has more domestic and international services. The Golden Temple and the Attari border ceremony make an easy day trip from Jalandhar, and Science City needs at least half a day.

Kapurthala, about 20 km west, has the French-style Jagatjit Palace and the Moorish Mosque.
