Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
Istanbul’s geography shapes every visit. Sultanahmet holds Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque within walking distance, while the Grand Bazaar is a separate trading maze nearby. Ferries across the Bosphorus reveal how the European and Asian shores fit together. Travellers from India may arrive for a city break or connect onwards, but a short stop still needs realistic transfer time: Istanbul Airport is northwest of the historic centre, and traffic can slow road routes sharply.
Sultanahmet is the most direct base for Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and nearby historic streets. A stay near Taksim instead favours the northern side of the central European districts, while Kadıköy provides an Asian-shore base reached by ferry or rail. Istanbul Airport is northwest of these areas; Sabiha Gökçen is a separate airport on the Asian side. A connection involving both needs a cross-city transfer.
The airport metro connects through Gayrettepe, where onward city rail serves other districts. In June 2026, the final Halkalı–Arnavutköy section opened, extending the airport railway towards Halkalı and giving passengers another western connection. Choose the interchange for the final hotel rather than assuming the airport train runs directly to Sultanahmet. The Grand Bazaar fits into a historic-peninsula day, while a Bosphorus ferry ride can be planned around an actual destination on the opposite shore. A scheduled public ferry and a sightseeing cruise offer different routes and ticket arrangements. The Blue Mosque is an active place of worship, so visitor access is organised around prayers; Hagia Sophia has separate visitor arrangements. Grouping these sites geographically still requires treating each entrance as a distinct visit. For an early flight, compare the first airport transport departure with the check-in time.
April to May or September to October, around 11–25°C, for walking and ferries.
By Air: Istanbul Airport (IST) is about 35 km northwest of the centre; metro to Gayrettepe takes roughly 30 minutes, followed by onward travel. Airport buses and taxis serve city districts.
By Rail: Gayrettepe connects the M11 airport metro with the wider metro network; Sirkeci is useful for historic peninsula travel.
By Road: Havaist airport buses serve major districts; intercity coaches use large terminals on both sides of the city.
