Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
Surat was a leading port of Mughal India and the site of the English East India Company's first factory in 1612, and it is now India's diamond-processing and synthetic-textile capital. The Surat Diamond Bourse at Khajod, opened in 2023, is among the largest office buildings in the world. Visitors mostly come on business, and stay for Surti food such as locho and undhiyu, the old Dutch and English cemeteries, the Surat Castle and the sea front at Dumas.
Hotels in the Athwa Lines, Piplod and Vesu areas are close to the airport and business districts, while the Ring Road and station area suit textile-market visits. App cabs, auto-rickshaws and the city's BRTS buses cover most trips, and the Surat Metro is under construction. In March 2026 the first phase of the Dumas Sea Face opened, with promenades and seating along the shore, and it is busiest on evenings and weekends. The old city around Chowk Bazaar, Gopipura and Nanpura keeps many wooden houses and is best explored on foot, while the wholesale textile markets along Ring Road sell sarees and fabric by the roll.
October to February is the most comfortable season; the monsoon from June to September can bring flooding when the Tapi rises. Navratri and Uttarayan in January are major events, and the Diwali shopping season is followed by a diamond-industry holiday of several weeks, when many businesses close. The beach at Dumas has dark sand and strong currents, so swimming is not advised. For food, the lanes of Chowk Bazaar and Gopipura serve breakfast snacks from early morning, and winter brings undhiyu stalls across the city. A Vande Bharat service to Udaipur has been announced for October 2026.
October to February, with days of about 16-31°C. June to September brings monsoon rain.
