Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
Srinagar spreads along the Jhelum and around Dal Lake, where shikaras and houseboats have served visitors since the colonial era. The Valley's economy depends on tourism, horticulture, especially apples, and handicrafts such as pashmina shawls, papier-mache and walnut-wood carving. Visitors come for the Mughal gardens of Nishat and Shalimar, the shrines and markets of the old city, the spring tulip garden, and as the base for Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
Houseboats on Dal and Nigeen lakes and hotels along the Boulevard suit a short stay, and Rajbagh and Lal Chowk are more central for the old city and shopping. App cabs are limited, so most visitors hire a taxi for the day through their hotel or the tourist reception centre. Prepaid mobile SIM cards from other states do not work in Jammu and Kashmir; only postpaid connections roam.
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden opens for about a month in March and April, and hotel demand peaks then and in May and June. July and August are warm and green, and snow usually arrives in December, when Gulmarg's ski season begins. Dress modestly at the Hazratbal Shrine and the Jamia Masjid, where women are asked to cover their heads. Airport security is strict, with checks at the entry gate as well as in the terminal, so reach the airport early.
April to October, with days of about 15-30°C. December to February is cold, often below freezing at night, with snow in the higher resorts.
By Air: Srinagar International Airport (SXR) is in Budgam district, about 12 km south of the city; allow 30-45 minutes by road. Taxis wait outside the terminal, and a government bus runs to the tourist reception centre near Lal Chowk.

By Road: NH 44 runs south through the Banihal tunnels to Jammu, and the road past Sonamarg continues over the Zojila Pass to Ladakh in summer. JKSRTC buses and shared taxis serve Jammu and the valley towns.
