Jaipur was laid out in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II on a grid of wide streets and bazaars, and the walled city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019. The same ruler built the Jantar Mantar observatory, which is a separate UNESCO site. Tourism, gems and jewellery, block-printed textiles and handicraft exports drive the economy. Visitors come for Amber Fort, the City Palace and Hawa Mahal, shopping in Johari and Bapu bazaars, and the Jaipur Literature Festival each January.
For a short trip, hotels in or near the walled city, around MI Road and C-Scheme, keep the main sights within a short taxi ride; Amber is about 11 km north. Jaipur Metro runs a single line from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar in the old city, and app cabs and auto-rickshaws cover the rest. A composite ticket from the state archaeology department covers Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Albert Hall, Nahargarh and other monuments over two days, which saves queuing at each gate.
October to March is the main season. December and January nights can fall to about 5°C, and April to June is very hot. The Jaipur Literature Festival in late January and Diwali, when the bazaars are lit, fill hotels quickly. Teej in July or August and Gangaur in March or April bring processions through the old city. Amber Fort opens early in the morning, and arriving at opening time avoids both the heat and the tour groups. Remove footwear at the Govind Dev Ji Temple in the City Palace complex and at Galta Ji, and dress modestly at both. Carry cash for small purchases in the old bazaars, where some shops still prefer it.
October to March, with days of about 20-30°C and cool nights. April to June often exceeds 40°C.
By Air: Jaipur International Airport (JAI) is at Sanganer, about 10 km south of the city centre; allow 25-40 minutes by road. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and auto-rickshaws serve both terminals.
By Rail: Jaipur Junction is the main station, with Gandhinagar Jaipur and Durgapura used by some trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Delhi Cantonment and Udaipur, and the Ajmer Shatabdi connects with New Delhi.
By Road: NH 48 runs north-east to Delhi and south-west to Ajmer. RSRTC buses leave from the Sindhi Camp bus stand for most towns in Rajasthan and for Delhi.

Shop for block-printed textiles in Bapu Bazaar and silver in Johari Bazaar.
Visit the temple tanks of Galta Ji in the hills east of the city.

Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
