Varanasi, also called Kashi and Banaras, stretches along a crescent of stone ghats on the Ganga and has drawn pilgrims for more than two thousand years. Its economy rests on pilgrimage and tourism, Banarasi silk weaving, handicrafts and Banaras Hindu University, one of India's largest residential universities. Visitors come for the dawn boat rides and the evening Ganga Aarti, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and its corridor, classical music, and Sarnath, about 10 km north, where the Buddha gave his first sermon.
Guesthouses on and near the ghats, from Assi to Dashashwamedh, put you within walking distance of the river, though cars cannot reach many of the lanes; the Cantonment and Sigra have larger hotels with road access. E-rickshaws, auto-rickshaws and boats are the usual transport, and walking is often fastest in the old city. Boat fares are agreed at the ghats, so settle the route and price before boarding.
October to March is the best season. December and January mornings are cold and foggy, and May and June are very hot. Dev Deepawali, on the full moon about two weeks after Diwali, lights the ghats with oil lamps and fills every boat and hotel. The river rises in the monsoon, and boat trips may be suspended between July and September. Phones, bags and pens are not allowed inside the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and must be left in lockers, and photography at the cremation ghats of Manikarnika and Harishchandra is not appropriate.
October to March, with days of about 8-28°C; December and January mornings are foggy. April to June is very hot.
By Air: Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) at Babatpur is about 26 km north-west of the city; allow 45-60 minutes to the ghats by road. Prepaid taxis and app cabs serve the terminal, and cars usually stop at the edge of the old city.
By Rail: Varanasi Junction (Cantt) and Banaras station are the main stops, and Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction across the river handles many long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to New Delhi and Khajuraho.
By Road: NH 19 runs west to Prayagraj and east towards Kolkata. UPSRTC buses leave from the Cantonment bus stand opposite Varanasi Junction.

Watch the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat.
Visit the Dhamek Stupa and the museum at Sarnath.

Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.

The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
