Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan, who built Mehrangarh on a rock ridge above the plain, and the blue-washed houses of the old city spread below its walls. The city trades in handicrafts, furniture, textiles and guar gum, and hosts a large air force station and army formations. Visitors come for Mehrangarh and its museum, the Umaid Bhawan Palace, the stepwells and markets of the old city, and as a stop between Jaipur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer.
Guesthouses in the old city below Mehrangarh put you close to the fort, the Clock Tower market and the Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell, though the lanes are narrow; hotels in Ratanada and Paota are closer to the airport and station. Auto-rickshaws are the usual way around, and app cabs work in the newer areas. The old city is best walked in the early morning or late afternoon.
October to March is the main season, with cool nights in December and January. April to June is very hot, often above 42°C. The Rajasthan International Folk Festival is held at Mehrangarh around the October full moon, and the Marwar Festival also falls in October. An audio guide is available at Mehrangarh. Part of the Umaid Bhawan Palace is a hotel and part remains a royal residence, and visitors can see its museum wing.
October to March, with days of about 10-30°C. April to June is very hot, often above 42°C.
By Air: Jodhpur Airport (JDH) is about 5 km south of the old city; allow 15-25 minutes by road. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and auto-rickshaws serve the terminal.
By Rail: Jodhpur Junction is the main station, with Bhagat Ki Kothi handling some trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Delhi Cantonment and to Sabarmati in Ahmedabad.
By Road: Highways run west to Jaisalmer, north-east to Jaipur and south to Udaipur. RSRTC buses leave from the Raika Bagh bus stand.

Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.

The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.
