Indore grew as the seat of the Holkar rulers and later as a textile and trading town, and it is now the largest city and commercial centre of Madhya Pradesh. Its industry spans pharmaceuticals, food processing and the automobile plants of Pithampur, while traders in Siyaganj and Sarafa set the pace in the old city. Visitors come for Rajwada palace, the night food market at Sarafa Bazaar and Chappan Dukan, and as the base for the Mahakaleshwar temple at Ujjain and the Narmada temples of Omkareshwar.
Vijay Nagar and the AB Road area suit business trips, with newer hotels near the malls and offices, while the streets around Rajwada and Sarafa are best for the old city. App cabs, auto-rickshaws and AICTSL city buses cover most trips.
October to March is the season for both Indore and the temple towns nearby; May is hot. Sarafa Bazaar turns into a food market after the jewellery shops close at night, and Chappan Dukan is busiest in the evening. Ujjain, about 55 km north, draws huge crowds on Mondays, during the Shravan month in July and August, and at Maha Shivaratri. The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar needs advance booking through the temple's official website, and those attending must follow its dress code of a dhoti for men and a saree for women.
October to March, with days of about 12-29°C. April to June is hot, and the monsoon brings rain from late June to September.

Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.

By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers.
