Colombo is often the first Sri Lankan stop after landing at Bandaranaike International Airport near Katunayake. Pettah’s market streets, the Gangaramaya temple and Galle Face Green show different parts of the city within a compact area, although road traffic changes the pace. The National Museum adds an indoor visit, and Colombo Fort remains an important transport point. Indian travellers can spend a day here before taking a train south or beginning a wider island route.
Fort is the practical choice when a rail departure forms part of a short stay; Galle Face instead puts the seafront within easy reach. Cinnamon Gardens suits the National Museum and Independence Square. Bandaranaike Airport is at Katunayake, outside Colombo, so an airport hotel and a central city hotel serve different purposes. A late arrival followed by an early flight may favour the airport area, whereas a day of sightseeing needs the road transfer into Colombo itself.
Pettah and Fort fit together as a market-and-architecture walk, while Gangaramaya and the nearby lake area belong to another circuit. The National Museum is a collection visit rather than a brief stop on the way to a train, so pair it with Cinnamon Gardens. Galle Face Green is a flexible evening endpoint after those indoor sights. City of Dreams Sri Lanka opened in August 2025, adding hotel, dining and entertainment facilities to the central waterfront area; it is separate from the older museum district. For onward rail travel, identify Colombo Fort station on the ticket rather than treating every Colombo station as interchangeable. Pettah’s commercial lanes can be awkward with wheeled luggage, making Fort accommodation useful when combining a market visit with an onward train.
December to March, around 23–32°C, with comparatively drier west-coast weather.

Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
