Coimbatore built its economy on cotton mills and later on wet grinders, pumps, motors and foundry work, which earned it the name Manchester of South India. The city also has large hospitals and engineering colleges that bring in students and patients from across the south. Visitors come for the Marudhamalai hill temple, the Isha Yoga Centre and its Adiyogi bust at the foot of the Velliangiri hills, and as the plains stop before the Nilgiris, whose mountain railway starts at nearby Mettupalayam.
Gandhipuram, RS Puram and Race Course are convenient for a short stay, with the railway station and bus stands nearby. App cabs and auto-rickshaws are the usual way to get around; there is no metro. For Ooty, most travellers drive up the ghat road via Mettupalayam or take the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam, whose seats sell out well ahead in summer.
The weather stays mild for much of the year, and October to March is the most comfortable season. The Palakkad Gap brings breezes during the south-west monsoon months without the heavy rain of the coast. Pongal in mid-January is the main festival, and Maha Shivaratri in February or March draws very large crowds to the Isha Yoga Centre. Isha asks visitors to dress modestly and keep silence inside the Dhyanalinga. Marudhamalai temple can be reached by steps or by road, and footwear is left at the base of the shrine.
October to March, with days of about 20-30°C. Summers are milder here than in most of Tamil Nadu.
By Air: Coimbatore International Airport (CJB) is at Peelamedu, about 10 km from the city centre; allow 25-40 minutes by road, helped by the new Avinashi Road flyover. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and town buses serve the airport.
By Rail: Coimbatore Junction is the main station, with Coimbatore North used by some trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Chennai and Bengaluru, and the Nilagiri Express links Chennai with Mettupalayam for the mountain railway.
By Road: NH 544 runs east to Salem and west through the Palakkad Gap to Kochi, and NH 181 climbs to Ooty. TNSTC and SETC buses leave from the Gandhipuram and Mettupalayam Road bus stands.

Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
