Bhopal was ruled for more than a century by the Begums of Bhopal, whose mosques and palaces, including the Taj-ul-Masajid, still shape the old city, and it became the capital of Madhya Pradesh in 1956. The economy rests on state government, public-sector engineering at BHEL, education and research institutes. Visitors come for the Upper Lake, the Tribal Museum and Bharat Bhavan, and for two UNESCO World Heritage Sites within about 50 km: the Buddhist stupas of Sanchi and the rock shelters of Bhimbetka.
New Market and MP Nagar are central and suit business trips, while hotels near the Upper Lake and Shyamla Hills look over the water. The city's first metro section, about 7.5 km from AIIMS to Subhash Nagar, opened to passengers on 21 December 2025, and app cabs, auto-rickshaws and city buses cover the rest. The Tribal Museum and Bharat Bhavan sit close together on Shyamla Hills and fill an afternoon, and Van Vihar National Park, on the shore of the Upper Lake, can be toured by car or bicycle.
October to March is the best season, and the lakes are fullest after the monsoon. April to June is hot. The Tribal Museum is closed on Mondays. Taj-ul-Masajid, one of the largest mosques in India, expects modest dress and welcomes visitors outside prayer times. Sanchi and Bhimbetka are best seen with an early start, as there is little shade at either site, and the two lie in different directions from the city, so most visitors give each its own half day. The old city's Chowk bazaar is known for zardozi embroidery and beaded potli bags, and the lanes around it are the place for kebabs in the evening and poha with jalebi at breakfast.
October to March, with days of about 10-28°C. April to June is hot, often above 40°C.

Raja Bhoj Airport, Bhopal (BHO). A single integrated terminal handles all passenger flights.
Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
