Vadodara, known as Baroda until 1974, was the capital of the Gaekwads, whose Laxmi Vilas Palace is one of the largest private residences built in India. The city grew around a refinery, petrochemical and fertiliser plants, engineering works and the Maharaja Sayajirao University, known for its fine arts faculty. Visitors come for the palace and its museum, the collections of the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery, the Navratri garba, and day trips to the Champaner-Pavagadh UNESCO site and the Statue of Unity.
Alkapuri, Sayajigunj and the area near the railway station are central for a short stay. App cabs and auto-rickshaws are the usual transport, and there is no metro. The bullet train station beside Vadodara Junction is under construction, and the first high-speed section, between Surat and Bilimora, is planned to open in 2027.
October to March is the most comfortable season, and the city is at its busiest during Navratri in September or October, when large garba grounds run late into the night and hotels fill early. The Laxmi Vilas Palace is visited on a ticketed audio tour, and the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum stands in the palace grounds. Champaner-Pavagadh, about 50 km north-east, pairs a hilltop temple reached by ropeway with the mosques of the old Sultanate capital below; start early to avoid the heat.
October to March, with days of about 13-30°C. April to June is very hot, often above 40°C.
By Air: Vadodara Airport (BDQ) at Harni is about 6 km north-east of the city centre; allow 20-30 minutes by road. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and auto-rickshaws serve the terminal.
By Rail: Vadodara Junction is one of the busiest stations on the Mumbai-Delhi line. Vande Bharat trains between Mumbai Central and Gandhinagar stop here, as do Rajdhani trains to Delhi and Mumbai.
By Road: The Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway runs north, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway passes the city with open sections towards Godhra and Bharuch. GSRTC buses leave from the central bus station beside the railway station.
Take the audio tour of the Laxmi Vilas Palace and its grounds.
See the Raja Ravi Varma paintings at the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum.
Ride the ropeway up Pavagadh hill and explore the mosques of Champaner below.
Visit the Statue of Unity at Ekta Nagar, about 90 km south-east.
Join the garba at one of the city's large Navratri grounds.
Vadodara Airport (BDQ). A single integrated terminal, opened in 2016, handles domestic flights by Air India and IndiGo.
Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
