Kozhikode, the Calicut of the spice trade, is where Vasco da Gama landed at Kappad in 1498, opening the sea route from Europe to India, and the cotton cloth called calico takes its name from the port. The city still trades in spices, timber and textiles, and its economy now leans on commerce, healthcare, education and money sent home by workers in the Gulf. Visitors come for Malabar biryani and seafood, the SM Street market, the beach front and the ghat road to Wayanad.
Most hotels for a short stay are near the beach, on Mavoor Road or around the railway station, all within a short auto-rickshaw ride of Mananchira Square and SM Street. City travel relies on private buses, auto-rickshaws and app cabs; there is no metro. The airport is at Karipur in Malappuram district, about 28 km away, so leave plenty of time for the drive, particularly for evening flights. The old trading quarter around Kuttichira, with its wooden mosques and tharavad houses, rewards a slow walk, and Beypore, about 10 km south, makes an easy half-day trip.
October to March is dry and pleasant. The south-west monsoon arrives in June and brings very heavy rain until September, when landslides can close the Thamarassery ghat road to Wayanad. Many families travel to and from the Gulf around the Eid holidays and in the school summer break, so flights fill early at those times. Mishkal Mosque in Kuttichira, built in the 14th century, is a working mosque; ask before entering and dress modestly. Kerala temples keep strict rules on dress and on entry for non-Hindus, so check at the gate before going in. Halwa shops on SM Street pack sweets for flights on request.
October to March, with days of about 23-32°C. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Calicut International Airport (CCJ) is at Karipur in Malappuram district, about 28 km from Kozhikode city; allow roughly an hour by road. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and KSRTC buses serve the airport.

Calicut International Airport (CCJ). Air India Express uses the airport as an operating base, and most of its international flights go to cities in the Gulf.
Dubai is easiest to understand by crossing its creek. Al Fahidi preserves lanes and courtyard houses on the Bur Dubai side, while Deira has the Gold and Spice Souks. Farther south, beaches and newer districts change the scale of a day out. For travellers from India, the city also has extensive family and business links. Dubai International Airport sits close to the older centre, and the Red Line connects two of its terminals to the urban rail network.
Bur Dubai makes a practical base for Al Fahidi and creek crossings, with Karama nearby for South Asian restaurants. A Dubai Marina hotel instead favours the waterfront and beach districts, which are a substantial distance from the older souks. The Red Line serves airport Terminals 1 and 3, so accommodation near that line can simplify arrival. Terminal 2 needs a road connection; do not choose a hotel transfer on the assumption that every terminal has its own metro platform.
Use the RTA’s Nol system for metro and bus travel, and check the fare zones for longer trips between the creek and Marina. An abra between Bur Dubai and Deira is part of the old-city route, rather than a substitute for a longer sightseeing cruise. Pair Al Fahidi with the Bur Dubai waterfront, then cross to the Gold and Spice Souks. Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa area deserve another block of time instead of a rushed detour between markets. A flight marketed by Emirates may involve a partner carrier, so the operating airline and terminal on the booking determine where to check in. Dubai World Central is a separate airport southwest of the city, not another terminal at Dubai International.
November to March, usually about 18–30°C, for creek walks and beaches.
By Air: Dubai International Airport (DXB) is about 5 km from the older city centre; allow roughly 15–30 minutes by road. The Metro Red Line serves Terminals 1 and 3, with buses and taxis at the airport.
By Rail: Union and BurJuman are key metro interchanges; DXB Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 stations are on the Red Line.
By Road: RTA buses serve the city; intercity buses connect Dubai with Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
