Kozhikode, the Calicut of the spice trade, is where Vasco da Gama landed at Kappad in 1498, opening the sea route from Europe to India, and the cotton cloth called calico takes its name from the port. The city still trades in spices, timber and textiles, and its economy now leans on commerce, healthcare, education and money sent home by workers in the Gulf. Visitors come for Malabar biryani and seafood, the SM Street market, the beach front and the ghat road to Wayanad.
Most hotels for a short stay are near the beach, on Mavoor Road or around the railway station, all within a short auto-rickshaw ride of Mananchira Square and SM Street. City travel relies on private buses, auto-rickshaws and app cabs; there is no metro. The airport is at Karipur in Malappuram district, about 28 km away, so leave plenty of time for the drive, particularly for evening flights. The old trading quarter around Kuttichira, with its wooden mosques and tharavad houses, rewards a slow walk, and Beypore, about 10 km south, makes an easy half-day trip.
October to March is dry and pleasant. The south-west monsoon arrives in June and brings very heavy rain until September, when landslides can close the Thamarassery ghat road to Wayanad. Many families travel to and from the Gulf around the Eid holidays and in the school summer break, so flights fill early at those times. Mishkal Mosque in Kuttichira, built in the 14th century, is a working mosque; ask before entering and dress modestly. Kerala temples keep strict rules on dress and on entry for non-Hindus, so check at the gate before going in. Halwa shops on SM Street pack sweets for flights on request.
October to March, with days of about 23-32°C. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.

Shop for halwa and banana chips along SM Street.
Stop at Thusharagiri Falls on the drive towards Wayanad.
Calicut International Airport (CCJ). Air India Express uses the airport as an operating base, and most of its international flights go to cities in the Gulf.
Al Ain is best explored by road because its oasis, forts and mountain sites lie in different parts of the city. Al Ain Oasis provides shaded paths through working palm groves, and Al Jahili Fort explains part of the region’s past. A drive up Jebel Hafit changes the view from gardens to rocky slopes. Travellers from India using Al Ain Airport face a shorter urban transfer than arrivals through Abu Dhabi or Dubai, though a car is still useful for sightseeing.
Central Al Ain is the more practical base for a short visit built around the oasis, forts and museums. A mountain-side stay serves a different purpose, placing Jebel Hafit at the centre of the trip while increasing the road travel needed for urban sights. The airport lies outside the central heritage cluster, so arrange the first transfer to the actual hotel district.
Al Ain Museum reopened in October 2025 after extensive redevelopment. Its galleries provide a useful introduction before exploring the oasis landscape. Pair this part of town with a walk through the oasis, where cultivated palms and the irrigation system explain how settlement developed in a dry inland environment. This is a working agricultural landscape as well as a visitor attraction.
Al Jahili Fort deserves another stop, rather than treating every heritage building as part of a single museum complex. Hili lies in a different part of the city and is better included in a planned drive. Put Jebel Hafit on a separate mountain outing so that the ascent does not interrupt the oasis walk. For two nights, a central heritage day followed by the mountain and Hili area is a more coherent starting plan than repeatedly crossing the city between individual attractions.
November to March, about 15–28°C, for oasis and mountain visits.
