Kozhikode, the Calicut of the spice trade, is where Vasco da Gama landed at Kappad in 1498, opening the sea route from Europe to India, and the cotton cloth called calico takes its name from the port. The city still trades in spices, timber and textiles, and its economy now leans on commerce, healthcare, education and money sent home by workers in the Gulf. Visitors come for Malabar biryani and seafood, the SM Street market, the beach front and the ghat road to Wayanad.
Most hotels for a short stay are near the beach, on Mavoor Road or around the railway station, all within a short auto-rickshaw ride of Mananchira Square and SM Street. City travel relies on private buses, auto-rickshaws and app cabs; there is no metro. The airport is at Karipur in Malappuram district, about 28 km away, so leave plenty of time for the drive, particularly for evening flights. The old trading quarter around Kuttichira, with its wooden mosques and tharavad houses, rewards a slow walk, and Beypore, about 10 km south, makes an easy half-day trip.
October to March is dry and pleasant. The south-west monsoon arrives in June and brings very heavy rain until September, when landslides can close the Thamarassery ghat road to Wayanad. Many families travel to and from the Gulf around the Eid holidays and in the school summer break, so flights fill early at those times. Mishkal Mosque in Kuttichira, built in the 14th century, is a working mosque; ask before entering and dress modestly. Kerala temples keep strict rules on dress and on entry for non-Hindus, so check at the gate before going in. Halwa shops on SM Street pack sweets for flights on request.
October to March, with days of about 23-32°C. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Calicut International Airport (CCJ) is at Karipur in Malappuram district, about 28 km from Kozhikode city; allow roughly an hour by road. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and KSRTC buses serve the airport.

By Road: NH 66 runs along the coast to Kannur and Kochi, and NH 766 climbs through Wayanad to Mysuru. KSRTC buses to Bengaluru and Mysuru leave from the KSRTC bus stand on Mavoor Road.
Walk Kozhikode Beach at sunset and eat grilled seafood from the stalls.
Visit the memorial stone at Kappad Beach where Vasco da Gama landed in 1498.
See wooden dhows being built at the boatyards of Beypore.
Shop for halwa and banana chips along SM Street.
Stop at Thusharagiri Falls on the drive towards Wayanad.
Calicut International Airport (CCJ). Air India Express uses the airport as an operating base, and most of its international flights go to cities in the Gulf.
Salalah changes character with the season. During khareef, mist and rain turn nearby hills green, while the drier months favour beach and archaeological visits. Al Baleed tells the story of the old frankincense trade; Mughsail Beach and Wadi Darbat require trips beyond central streets. Travellers from India can reach most hotels quickly from Salalah Airport, but the wider Dhofar region needs a clear road plan. Check weather and access conditions before setting off towards valleys or mountain viewpoints.
A central Salalah hotel works well for Haffa Souq and short city outings. A beach resort creates a different visit, with meals and the waterfront close by but more driving for markets and heritage sites. The airport is near the urban area, yet the distance from the terminal to an outlying resort can differ considerably from a transfer to the town centre.
Al Baleed Archaeological Park and the Museum of the Frankincense Land belong together in one visit. The museum gives context to the trading landscape before a walk around the archaeological remains. Haffa Souq makes a separate market stop, with frankincense providing a direct link between the exhibits and goods sold in the city.
Divide the wider coastline into directions. Mughsail lies west of Salalah, whereas Wadi Darbat belongs to an eastern excursion, so combining them creates a long cross-region drive. During the khareef season, the appeal shifts towards Dhofar's greener hills and misty landscape; this also changes the character of a beach-centred holiday. A traveller staying only two nights should choose either the western coast or the eastern valley circuit alongside the city sights. That choice leaves room for Al Baleed instead of reducing it to a pause between road trips.
June to September for green khareef landscapes, about 23–29°C; October to March for drier outings.
