Udaipur was founded in the 16th century by Maharana Udai Singh II of Mewar after Chittorgarh came under siege, and the City Palace on the east bank of Lake Pichola remains the seat of the former royal family. Tourism, weddings and the hotel trade drive the economy, along with marble, zinc mining around Zawar and handicrafts. Visitors come for boat rides on Pichola, the Jag Mandir island palace and miniature painting, and for day trips to the walls of Kumbhalgarh and the Jain temples of Ranakpur.
Hotels around Lal Ghat and Gangaur Ghat on the east bank, or across the water at Hanuman Ghat, put you within walking distance of the City Palace, while Fateh Sagar and the newer areas are quieter. Auto-rickshaws and app cabs cover the city. The airport at Dabok is about 22 km east, so allow 40 minutes to an hour for the drive, and a larger terminal is being built there. Many visitors combine Udaipur with Chittorgarh, about 115 km north-east, for its hilltop fort.
September to March is the best season, and the lakes are fullest after a good monsoon in July and August. The wedding season from November to February pushes up hotel prices. Gangaur in March or April and the Mewar Festival that accompanies it bring processions to the ghats. The City Palace charges extra for cameras, and boat trips on Pichola sell out around sunset. At the Jagdish Temple, remove your shoes and dress modestly. Miniature painting workshops in the old city offer short lessons as well as sales. Kumbhalgarh and Chittorgarh both belong to the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan, and the road around Fateh Sagar fills with food stalls in the evening.
September to March, with days of about 12-30°C. April to June is hot, often near 40°C.

New Delhi is the seat of India's central government, and the metropolis around it runs on public administration, services, retail and the corporate offices of Gurugram and Noida. Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites lie within the city: the Red Fort complex, the Qutb Minar and its monuments, and Humayun's Tomb. Visitors come for those sites, for the food lanes of Old Delhi and for trade fairs at Pragati Maidan, and many use Delhi as the first stop before Agra, Jaipur or the hills of Himachal and Uttarakhand.
For a two or three day stay, Connaught Place, Paharganj and Karol Bagh sit on the Blue and Yellow metro lines, while Aerocity suits early departures because it is next to the airport. The Delhi Metro is the quickest way across the city, and a smart card or a QR ticket bought on a phone saves time at the counters. October to March is the main sightseeing season, though smog can be heavy in November, and Diwali week fills hotels and trains. May and June are extremely hot.
The Red Fort is closed on Mondays. At Jama Masjid and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, remove your shoes and cover your shoulders and legs; the gurudwara also asks everyone to cover their head and lends scarves at the entrance. Swaminarayan Akshardham does not allow phones or cameras inside, so leave them in the cloakroom or at the hotel.
