New Delhi is the seat of India's central government, and the metropolis around it runs on public administration, services, retail and the corporate offices of Gurugram and Noida. Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites lie within the city: the Red Fort complex, the Qutb Minar and its monuments, and Humayun's Tomb. Visitors come for those sites, for the food lanes of Old Delhi and for trade fairs at Pragati Maidan, and many use Delhi as the first stop before Agra, Jaipur or the hills of Himachal and Uttarakhand.
For a two or three day stay, Connaught Place, Paharganj and Karol Bagh sit on the Blue and Yellow metro lines, while Aerocity suits early departures because it is next to the airport. The Delhi Metro is the quickest way across the city, and a smart card or a QR ticket bought on a phone saves time at the counters. October to March is the main sightseeing season, though smog can be heavy in November, and Diwali week fills hotels and trains. May and June are extremely hot.
The Red Fort is closed on Mondays. At Jama Masjid and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, remove your shoes and cover your shoulders and legs; the gurudwara also asks everyone to cover their head and lends scarves at the entrance. Swaminarayan Akshardham does not allow phones or cameras inside, so leave them in the cloakroom or at the hotel.
October to March, with days of about 7-30°C; November can bring heavy smog. April to June often passes 40°C.
By Air: Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is about 16 km south-west of Connaught Place; allow 40-60 minutes by road, more at peak hours. The Airport Express metro line links Terminal 3 with New Delhi station, the Magenta Line serves Terminal 1, and prepaid taxis and app cabs run from all terminals.
By Rail: New Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Old Delhi and Anand Vihar Terminal are the main stations. Vande Bharat trains run to Varanasi, Amritsar and Katra, and Rajdhani services link the city with Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
By Road: NH 44 runs north to Punjab and Kashmir, the Yamuna Expressway reaches Agra, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is open in sections to the south-west. State and private buses leave from the Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan bus terminals.

Jammu, often called the City of Temples, rises from the plains towards the Shivalik foothills along the Tawi river and was the seat of the Dogra rulers who built the Mubarak Mandi palace complex. It is the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, a large army station and the gateway for pilgrims to the Vaishno Devi shrine at Katra, about 50 km away. Visitors come for the Raghunath Temple, Bahu Fort, Pahari paintings at the Amar Mahal Museum and the drive to Patnitop.
Hotels around Gandhi Nagar, Residency Road and the railway station suit a short stay. App cabs, auto-rickshaws and matadors, the local shared minibuses, cover the city. Most Vaishno Devi pilgrims continue to Katra by train or road, and registration for the yatra is compulsory: the shrine board issues yatra cards online and at Katra, and the RFID card must be carried on the trek.
October to March is the most comfortable time in Jammu, though Patnitop and the hills are snowy in winter. May and June are very hot on the plains, and the monsoon from July to September can trigger landslides on the Srinagar highway. Navratri in spring and autumn brings the heaviest crowds to Katra. Prepaid SIM cards from outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work in the union territory; postpaid connections do.
October to March, with days of about 8-26°C. May and June are very hot, often above 40°C.
