Tiruchirappalli, written Tiruchirapally in many flight listings and known locally as Trichy, grew around the Rockfort outcrop above the Kaveri and the island temple town of Srirangam. November to February is the most comfortable period; April to June is very hot. Vaikunta Ekadasi in December or January brings huge crowds to Srirangam for the opening of the Paramapada Vasal gate. Non-Hindus may walk the outer courtyards of the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple but not enter the inner sanctum, and footwear is left at the entrance gopuram. The climb to the Ucchi Pillayar temple at the top of the Rockfort is several hundred rock-cut steps, best done in the early morning or evening. Thanjavur, about 55 km east, makes an easy day trip, and the Kallanai dam and the Mukkombu riverside park on the Kaveri are pleasant in the late afternoon.
