Tiruchirappalli, written Tiruchirapally in many flight listings and known locally as Trichy, grew around the Rockfort outcrop above the Kaveri and the island temple town of Srirangam. Industry arrived with Bharat Heavy Electricals and the Golden Rock railway workshop, and colleges such as NIT Tiruchirappalli draw students from across India. Many families in the region work in Singapore, Malaysia and the Gulf, which keeps the airport's international routes busy. Visitors come for Srirangam, the Rockfort temple and the Chola sites of Thanjavur nearby.
Hotels around the Central Bus Stand and the Cantonment are convenient for a short stay, while Srirangam has pilgrim lodges near the temple. App cabs and auto-rickshaws are the usual way around. The streets of Chinnakadai Bazaar below the Rockfort are the old commercial heart, busy with textile and jewellery shops. Since July 2025 many intercity buses use the new air-conditioned Panjapur Integrated Bus Terminus on the southern edge of the city rather than the old central stand, so check where your bus leaves from.
November to February is the most comfortable period; April to June is very hot. Vaikunta Ekadasi in December or January brings huge crowds to Srirangam for the opening of the Paramapada Vasal gate. Non-Hindus may walk the outer courtyards of the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple but not enter the inner sanctum, and footwear is left at the entrance gopuram. The climb to the Ucchi Pillayar temple at the top of the Rockfort is several hundred rock-cut steps, best done in the early morning or evening. Thanjavur, about 55 km east, makes an easy day trip, and the Kallanai dam and the Mukkombu riverside park on the Kaveri are pleasant in the late afternoon.
November to February, with days of about 21-30°C. April to June is very hot, often near 40°C.

Colombo is often the first Sri Lankan stop after landing at Bandaranaike International Airport near Katunayake. Pettah’s market streets, the Gangaramaya temple and Galle Face Green show different parts of the city within a compact area, although road traffic changes the pace. The National Museum adds an indoor visit, and Colombo Fort remains an important transport point. Indian travellers can spend a day here before taking a train south or beginning a wider island route.
Fort is the practical choice when a rail departure forms part of a short stay; Galle Face instead puts the seafront within easy reach. Cinnamon Gardens suits the National Museum and Independence Square. Bandaranaike Airport is at Katunayake, outside Colombo, so an airport hotel and a central city hotel serve different purposes. A late arrival followed by an early flight may favour the airport area, whereas a day of sightseeing needs the road transfer into Colombo itself.
Pettah and Fort fit together as a market-and-architecture walk, while Gangaramaya and the nearby lake area belong to another circuit. The National Museum is a collection visit rather than a brief stop on the way to a train, so pair it with Cinnamon Gardens. Galle Face Green is a flexible evening endpoint after those indoor sights. City of Dreams Sri Lanka opened in August 2025, adding hotel, dining and entertainment facilities to the central waterfront area; it is separate from the older museum district. For onward rail travel, identify Colombo Fort station on the ticket rather than treating every Colombo station as interchangeable. Pettah’s commercial lanes can be awkward with wheeled luggage, making Fort accommodation useful when combining a market visit with an onward train.
