Nagpur holds the Zero Mile Stone of the old British survey, and its central position has made it a rail, road and air junction linking north and south India. The economy mixes government, trade, the MIHAN special economic zone beside the airport and the orange orchards of Vidarbha. Visitors come for the Deekshabhoomi stupa, where B. R. Ambedkar embraced Buddhism in 1956, for the spicy saoji cooking of the old city, and above all as the base for tiger safaris at Tadoba, Pench and Umred-Karhandla.
Sitabuldi, Dharampeth and Civil Lines are central for a short stay. Nagpur Metro's Orange and Aqua lines cross at Sitabuldi, and a feeder bus links the airport with the Airport metro station. For Tadoba, most visitors drive about three hours to the Moharli or Kolara gates; safari permits are released online well in advance and sell out quickly for the dry months.
Nagpur is among the hottest cities in India in May, when afternoons can pass 45°C, so plan city visits between November and February. Tadoba stays open for safaris through the summer, when animals gather at waterholes, but its core zones close for the monsoon from July to September. Deekshabhoomi draws very large crowds on Dhammachakra Pravartan Day, which falls on Dussehra in September or October.
November to February, with days of about 12-30°C. April to June is extremely hot, often above 45°C in May.
By Air: Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (NAG) at Sonegaon is about 8 km south-west of the city centre; allow 20-30 minutes by road. Feeder buses run every 15 minutes to the Airport metro station on the Orange Line, and prepaid taxis and app cabs are available.
By Rail: Nagpur Junction is one of the busiest stations in central India, and Ajni handles some trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Secunderabad, Bilaspur, Indore and Pune, and Rajdhani and Duronto services pass through towards Delhi, Mumbai and the south.
By Road: NH 44 runs north to Jabalpur and south to Hyderabad, NH 53 links Raipur and Amravati, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg reaches the Mumbai region. MSRTC buses leave from the Ganeshpeth central bus stand.

Raipur became the capital of Chhattisgarh when the state was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000, and the government has since built the planned administrative city of Nava Raipur Atal Nagar to its south-east. The region's coal, iron ore and limestone feed steel plants, sponge iron units and cement works around Raipur and neighbouring Bhilai. Visitors come for business, for the Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum, and as the starting point for Bastar, the Buddhist ruins at Sirpur and the Chitrakote waterfall.
Hotels along GE Road, around Telibandha and near the railway station suit a short stay, and Nava Raipur has newer business hotels closer to the airport. There is no metro; app cabs, auto-rickshaws and city buses cover most trips. In November 2025 the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Memorial and Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum opened in Nava Raipur, a digital museum with galleries on 14 tribal revolts, and it pairs well with the older Purkhauti Muktangan open-air museum nearby, which shows village houses and crafts from across the state. Budha Talab in the old city is the place for an evening walk.
November to February is the pleasant season. April to June is very hot, and the monsoon from late June to September brings heavy rain but also the fullest flow at Chitrakote, near Jagdalpur about 300 km south. Bastar Dussehra, which runs for about 75 days around September and October in Jagdalpur, is one of the most distinctive festivals in central India. Some interior parts of Bastar have security restrictions, so check local advice before driving off the main highways. Sirpur, about 80 km east, makes a good day trip for its brick temple and monastery ruins.
November to February, with days of about 13-29°C. April to June is very hot, often above 42°C.
By Air: Swami Vivekananda Airport (RPR) at Mana is about 15 km south-east of Raipur and 10 km from Nava Raipur; allow 30-40 minutes to the city by road. Taxis and app cabs are available, and buses link the airport with Raipur, Nava Raipur, Bhilai and Durg.
