Destination & City Travel Guide

About Nagpur

Nagpur holds the Zero Mile Stone of the old British survey, and its central position has made it a rail, road and air junction linking north and south India. The economy mixes government, trade, the MIHAN special economic zone beside the airport and the orange orchards of Vidarbha. Visitors come for the Deekshabhoomi stupa, where B. R. Ambedkar embraced Buddhism in 1956, for the spicy saoji cooking of the old city, and above all as the base for tiger safaris at Tadoba, Pench and Umred-Karhandla.

What's new in Nagpur

  • June 2025: The last 76 km of the Samruddhi Mahamarg opened on 5 June 2025, completing the 701 km expressway between Nagpur and the Mumbai region and bringing the drive to Thane down to about eight hours.
  • August 2025: A Vande Bharat Express between Ajni in Nagpur and Pune was flagged off on 10 August 2025, adding a daytime chair-car link to Pune.

Tips for travellers

Sitabuldi, Dharampeth and Civil Lines are central for a short stay. Nagpur Metro's Orange and Aqua lines cross at Sitabuldi, and a feeder bus links the airport with the Airport metro station. For Tadoba, most visitors drive about three hours to the Moharli or Kolara gates; safari permits are released online well in advance and sell out quickly for the dry months.

Nagpur is among the hottest cities in India in May, when afternoons can pass 45°C, so plan city visits between November and February. Tadoba stays open for safaris through the summer, when animals gather at waterholes, but its core zones close for the monsoon from July to September. Deekshabhoomi draws very large crowds on Dhammachakra Pravartan Day, which falls on Dussehra in September or October.

Best time to visit Nagpur

November to February, with days of about 12-30°C. April to June is extremely hot, often above 45°C in May.

By Rail: Nagpur Junction is one of the busiest stations in central India, and Ajni handles some trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Secunderabad, Bilaspur, Indore and Pune, and Rajdhani and Duronto services pass through towards Delhi, Mumbai and the south.

About Kolkata

Kolkata was the capital of British India until 1911, and its port, jute trade and publishing houses made it the commercial centre of the east. It opened the country's first metro in 1984, and College Street remains one of the largest second-hand book markets in India. Visitors come for the Victoria Memorial, the ghats along the Hooghly, Bengali sweets and fish, and above all for Durga Puja in autumn, which UNESCO added to its intangible cultural heritage list in 2021.

What's new in Kolkata

  • August 2025: A Yellow Line section from Noapara to Jai Hind (Biman Bandar) opened on 22 August 2025, giving the airport its first metro station.
  • August 2025: On the same day the Green Line gap between Esplanade and Sealdah opened, so trains now run through from Howrah Maidan and Howrah station, under the Hooghly, to Sealdah and Salt Lake Sector V.
  • January 2026: India's first Vande Bharat sleeper train started running between Howrah and Kamakhya in Guwahati on 17 January 2026, an overnight trip of about 14 hours.

Tips for travellers

Park Street and the streets around Esplanade suit a short trip, with New Market, the Maidan and the Victoria Memorial close by; Salt Lake and New Town are nearer the airport and the IT offices. The Blue Line metro is the fastest way north and south, and the Green Line now crosses the river to Howrah. Yellow Ambassador taxis still run on the meter alongside app cabs.

November to February brings dry, mild days. Durga Puja falls in September or October; during the five main days, roads near the large pandals close to traffic, hotel rates rise and flights fill early. Kali Puja and Diwali follow a few weeks later. Heavy monsoon showers from June to September can leave streets waterlogged. The Victoria Memorial museum is closed on Mondays. Expect long queues at Kalighat and Dakshineswar on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and leave footwear at the counters outside.
