Kolkata was the capital of British India until 1911, and its port, jute trade and publishing houses made it the commercial centre of the east. It opened the country's first metro in 1984, and College Street remains one of the largest second-hand book markets in India. Visitors come for the Victoria Memorial, the ghats along the Hooghly, Bengali sweets and fish, and above all for Durga Puja in autumn, which UNESCO added to its intangible cultural heritage list in 2021.
Park Street and the streets around Esplanade suit a short trip, with New Market, the Maidan and the Victoria Memorial close by; Salt Lake and New Town are nearer the airport and the IT offices. The Blue Line metro is the fastest way north and south, and the Green Line now crosses the river to Howrah. Yellow Ambassador taxis still run on the meter alongside app cabs.
November to February brings dry, mild days. Durga Puja falls in September or October; during the five main days, roads near the large pandals close to traffic, hotel rates rise and flights fill early. Kali Puja and Diwali follow a few weeks later. Heavy monsoon showers from June to September can leave streets waterlogged. The Victoria Memorial museum is closed on Mondays. Expect long queues at Kalighat and Dakshineswar on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and leave footwear at the counters outside.
November to February, with days of about 12-27°C and little rain. The monsoon runs from June to September.

By Rail: Howrah and Sealdah are the main terminals, with Shalimar and Kolkata (Chitpur) handling some long-distance trains. Rajdhani services run to New Delhi, and the Vande Bharat sleeper links Howrah with Guwahati.
By Road: NH 19 runs north-west towards Durgapur and Delhi, and NH 16 south to Odisha. State and private buses leave from the Esplanade bus terminus for Digha, Siliguri and other destinations.
See the Victoria Memorial galleries and walk its gardens at dusk.

Imphal is the capital of Manipur and the largest city in the valley that holds most of the state's population. The city runs on government, trade, handloom weaving and small businesses, and much of its produce passes through Ima Keithel, a large market run entirely by women. Visitors come for the Kangla Fort, the Shree Govindajee Temple, Manipuri dance and polo, the Second World War cemeteries, and Loktak Lake with its floating phumdis and the Keibul Lamjao National Park.
Hotels around Paona Bazaar, Thangal Bazaar and the city centre suit a short stay. Auto-rickshaws and hired cars are the usual transport. There is no rail link yet, as the line from Jiribam is still under construction, so the airport is the main way in. Visitors from other states need an Inner Line Permit for Manipur, which can be applied for online or obtained on arrival, and foreign nationals must register with the local authorities after arriving. Ima Keithel is busiest in the morning, with fish, vegetables, handloom phanek and shawls across its buildings, and many stalls take only cash. Manipuri polo is played at the Mapal Kangjeibung ground, one of the oldest polo grounds in the world.
Parts of Manipur have seen ethnic violence since May 2023, and conditions can change quickly, so check current travel advisories and local news before planning road trips outside Imphal. October to April is the most comfortable season. The Sangai Festival in November showcases Manipuri dance, food and crafts, and Yaoshang in February or March is the state's spring festival, held alongside Holi with sports and folk events. Loktak is best in the dry months, when the phumdis are easy to see from Sendra island.
October to April, with days of about 12-26°C. May to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
