Kanpur grew under British rule as a garrison town and then as an industrial centre whose tanneries and cotton and woollen mills made it a byword for manufacturing in the north. Leather goods, saddlery, ordnance factories and wholesale trade remain central to the economy, and IIT Kanpur, founded in 1959, is one of India's leading engineering institutes. Visitors come for the 1857 memorial sites, the JK Temple, the ghats along the Ganga and the nearby town of Bithoor, linked to the Ramayana and to Nana Sahib.
The Mall Road, Civil Lines and Swaroop Nagar areas are central for a short stay. The metro now links IIT Kanpur, Moti Jheel and the old market district with Kanpur Central, and app cabs and auto-rickshaws cover the rest of the city. Kanpur's airport at Chakeri has a limited number of flights, so some travellers use Lucknow's larger airport and drive down the new expressway.
October to March is the most comfortable season, though December and January bring dense fog that disrupts flights and trains. May and June are extremely hot. Holi is celebrated here over several days and ends with the Ganga Mela, a local tradition linked to the freedom struggle. The JK Temple, built in white marble by the Singhania family, is a calm stop in the city.

By Rail: Kanpur Central is one of the busiest junctions on the Delhi-Howrah main line, and Vande Bharat, Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains to Delhi stop here.
By Road: NH 19 runs west to Agra and Delhi and east to Prayagraj, and the new expressway links the city with Lucknow. UPSRTC buses leave from the Jhakarkati bus stand.

New Delhi is the seat of India's central government, and the metropolis around it runs on public administration, services, retail and the corporate offices of Gurugram and Noida. Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites lie within the city: the Red Fort complex, the Qutb Minar and its monuments, and Humayun's Tomb. Visitors come for those sites, for the food lanes of Old Delhi and for trade fairs at Pragati Maidan, and many use Delhi as the first stop before Agra, Jaipur or the hills of Himachal and Uttarakhand.
For a two or three day stay, Connaught Place, Paharganj and Karol Bagh sit on the Blue and Yellow metro lines, while Aerocity suits early departures because it is next to the airport. The Delhi Metro is the quickest way across the city, and a smart card or a QR ticket bought on a phone saves time at the counters. October to March is the main sightseeing season, though smog can be heavy in November, and Diwali week fills hotels and trains. May and June are extremely hot.
The Red Fort is closed on Mondays. At Jama Masjid and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, remove your shoes and cover your shoulders and legs; the gurudwara also asks everyone to cover their head and lends scarves at the entrance. Swaminarayan Akshardham does not allow phones or cameras inside, so leave them in the cloakroom or at the hotel.
