Guwahati is the commercial hub of Assam and the transit point for most of the North-East, with an oil refinery at Noonmati, a large tea auction centre and the state capital at Dispur within its limits. Its airport and railway stations carry much of the traffic bound for Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Visitors come for the Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill, river cruises on the Brahmaputra, Assamese thalis and silk from nearby Sualkuchi, and as the starting point for Kaziranga National Park.
Paltan Bazaar, Fancy Bazaar and GS Road are central for a short stay and close to the railway station and bus operators. There is no metro; app cabs, auto-rickshaws and city buses cover the city, and shared taxis to Shillong leave from Paltan Bazaar. Indian visitors to Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland need an Inner Line Permit, which can be applied for online before travel, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for Arunachal.
October to April is the drier season, with cool nights from December to February. The monsoon, from May or June to September, brings heavy rain and occasional flooding along the Brahmaputra, and Kaziranga closes to safaris in these months. The Ambubachi Mela in June shuts the Kamakhya Temple for three days and brings very large crowds when it reopens. Bihu in mid-April and mid-January is Assam's main festival. Queues at Kamakhya can take hours; a paid faster queue is available, and footwear is left at the base of the shrine.
October to April, with days of about 10-28°C. May to September is hot and humid with heavy rain.

New Delhi is the seat of India's central government, and the metropolis around it runs on public administration, services, retail and the corporate offices of Gurugram and Noida. Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites lie within the city: the Red Fort complex, the Qutb Minar and its monuments, and Humayun's Tomb. Visitors come for those sites, for the food lanes of Old Delhi and for trade fairs at Pragati Maidan, and many use Delhi as the first stop before Agra, Jaipur or the hills of Himachal and Uttarakhand.
For a two or three day stay, Connaught Place, Paharganj and Karol Bagh sit on the Blue and Yellow metro lines, while Aerocity suits early departures because it is next to the airport. The Delhi Metro is the quickest way across the city, and a smart card or a QR ticket bought on a phone saves time at the counters. October to March is the main sightseeing season, though smog can be heavy in November, and Diwali week fills hotels and trains. May and June are extremely hot.
The Red Fort is closed on Mondays. At Jama Masjid and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, remove your shoes and cover your shoulders and legs; the gurudwara also asks everyone to cover their head and lends scarves at the entrance. Swaminarayan Akshardham does not allow phones or cameras inside, so leave them in the cloakroom or at the hotel.
October to March, with days of about 7-30°C; November can bring heavy smog. April to June often passes 40°C.
