Destination & City Travel Guide

About Amritsar

Amritsar grew around the sacred pool founded by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, in the 16th century, and the Harmandir Sahib at its centre draws pilgrims and visitors round the clock. The city's economy rests on trade, textiles, food processing and religious tourism, and many families have relatives in Canada, the United Kingdom and the Gulf. Visitors come for the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, the flag-lowering ceremony at the Attari border and the kulchas and lassi of the old city.

What's new in Amritsar

  • August 2025: A Vande Bharat Express between Amritsar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra was flagged off on 10 August 2025, running via Beas, Jalandhar, Pathankot and Jammu Tawi in about 5 hours 35 minutes.
  • July 2026: On 28 July 2026 Amritsar became the second airport, after Varanasi, in the government's hub-and-spoke scheme, which lets passengers bound abroad via Delhi complete check-in and immigration in Amritsar.

Tips for travellers

Hotels in the walled city around the Golden Temple suit pilgrims and first-time visitors, while Ranjit Avenue and Lawrence Road are quieter. E-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are the usual way around the old city, where the approach to the temple is pedestrianised. The Retreat ceremony at Attari, about 30 km west, starts in the late afternoon; arrive early for seats, carry photo identification and leave large bags behind.

October to March is the most comfortable season, though December and January can be foggy and cold. Gurpurab celebrations, Baisakhi in mid-April and Diwali, when the temple is lit up, bring very large crowds. At the Golden Temple everyone must cover their head, remove their shoes and wash their feet before entering, and tobacco and alcohol are forbidden in the complex. The Guru Ram Das Langar serves free meals to all visitors through the day and night.

Best time to visit Amritsar

October to March, with days of about 5-27°C; December and January bring fog and cold nights. May and June often pass 40°C.

How to reach Amritsar

By Rail: Amritsar Junction is the main station. Vande Bharat trains run to Delhi and Katra, and the Shatabdi links Amritsar with New Delhi.

By Road: The Grand Trunk Road runs east to Jalandhar and Delhi and west to the Attari border. PRTC, PUNBUS and private buses leave from the inter-state bus terminal on GT Road.

What to do in Amritsar

About Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur can be explored in linked pockets rather than from one landmark. Central Market and nearby streets suit a walking morning, the Petronas Towers area gives a contrasting skyline, and Batu Caves is a separate rail outing north of town. Visitors can also find familiar food around Brickfields and Masjid India. Kuala Lumpur International Airport lies well outside the city, but its express rail connection to KL Sentral makes arrival planning straightforward.

Tips for travellers from India

KL Sentral is a practical base for a brief stay because the airport railway arrives there and Brickfields is beside the station district. Bukit Bintang is better for evening restaurants and shopping, while KLCC suits a visit centred on the Petronas Towers. The airport is well outside these neighbourhoods. Distinguish the KLIA Ekspres from the stopping KLIA Transit service, and select the airport terminal that matches the airline before buying a ticket.

Brickfields and the old textile-shopping streets provide two different areas for familiar meals; they are not the same neighbourhood. Central Market and nearby old-city streets fit together on foot, while Batu Caves is a separate northbound rail outing. At Batu Caves, the climb to the main cave is a substantial staircase, so it deserves more than a brief photo stop between central attractions. Petronas Towers viewing visits depend on a timed ticket rather than simply entering the surrounding shopping centre. The airport’s Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are separate buildings connected by ground transport; the Aerotrain at Terminal 1 serves its satellite building and does not transfer passengers to Terminal 2. Keep that distinction clear when arranging a connection between Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia bookings. Batu Caves belongs on the KTM commuter-rail itinerary.
