Amritsar grew around the sacred pool founded by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, in the 16th century, and the Harmandir Sahib at its centre draws pilgrims and visitors round the clock. The city's economy rests on trade, textiles, food processing and religious tourism, and many families have relatives in Canada, the United Kingdom and the Gulf. Visitors come for the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, the flag-lowering ceremony at the Attari border and the kulchas and lassi of the old city.
Hotels in the walled city around the Golden Temple suit pilgrims and first-time visitors, while Ranjit Avenue and Lawrence Road are quieter. E-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are the usual way around the old city, where the approach to the temple is pedestrianised. The Retreat ceremony at Attari, about 30 km west, starts in the late afternoon; arrive early for seats, carry photo identification and leave large bags behind.
October to March is the most comfortable season, though December and January can be foggy and cold. Gurpurab celebrations, Baisakhi in mid-April and Diwali, when the temple is lit up, bring very large crowds. At the Golden Temple everyone must cover their head, remove their shoes and wash their feet before entering, and tobacco and alcohol are forbidden in the complex. The Guru Ram Das Langar serves free meals to all visitors through the day and night.

Chandigarh was built in the 1950s as the new capital of Punjab after Partition, and Le Corbusier's Capitol Complex is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of his work. The city is a union territory and the capital of both Punjab and Haryana, and with Mohali and Panchkula it forms the tricity, a hub for government, education, hospitals and IT. Visitors come for the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake and the numbered sectors with their green belts, and as the starting point for Shimla, Kasauli and Himachal.
Sector 17 and Sector 22 are central for a short stay, and Sector 35 and the Industrial Area have many mid-range hotels; the airport is closer to Zirakpur and Mohali. The sectors are numbered on a grid, so addresses are easy to follow. There is no metro. CTU buses cover the tricity, and app cabs and auto-rickshaws are easy to find. The Capitol Complex, with the High Court, Secretariat and Open Hand monument, can be seen on guided tours arranged at its visitor centre, and visitors need photo identification.
October to March is the most comfortable season. December and January bring fog and cold nights, and May and June are very hot. The Rose Festival in the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is held in February. Shimla is about 115 km away and Kasauli about 60 km, and weekend traffic on the Kalka-Shimla road can be heavy, especially in May and June and during snowfall. The Kalka-Shimla toy train, a UNESCO-listed mountain railway, starts from Kalka, about 25 km from Chandigarh, and its seats should be reserved in advance. The city's wide roads and cycle tracks make it easy to explore by bicycle in the cooler months.

By Air: Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport (IXC) is on the Mohali side of the city's southern edge, about 12 km from Sector 17; allow 25-40 minutes by road. CTU buses, taxis and app cabs link the airport with the tricity.
By Rail: Chandigarh station is the main stop, with Kalka, Mohali and Panchkula nearby. Shatabdi and Vande Bharat trains link Chandigarh with New Delhi, and a Vande Bharat continues to Amb Andaura in Himachal Pradesh.
By Road: The road south to Delhi joins NH 44 at Ambala, and NH 5 climbs from Kalka to Shimla. HRTC, PRTC and Haryana Roadways buses leave from the ISBTs in Sectors 17 and 43.
