Kathmandu rewards slow movement between its heritage areas. Durbar Square contains palace courtyards and temples, Swayambhunath rises west of the old centre, and Boudhanath is a separate stupa district. Pashupatinath draws Hindu pilgrims from India. Road traffic and narrow lanes mean that a short map distance can take time, so group two nearby sites rather than rushing across the whole valley. Tribhuvan International Airport sits close to the city by distance, but the drive still needs a margin.
Thamel is useful for restaurants, trekking services and a walk towards Kathmandu Durbar Square. A stay around Boudhanath instead favours the stupa neighbourhood and the eastern side of the city. Patan and Bhaktapur have their own heritage centres across the valley, so they need separate plans rather than being treated as adjacent sections of Kathmandu’s Durbar Square. Tribhuvan Airport is on the eastern side, which can make Boudhanath or Pashupatinath a more logical first outing than a cross-city drive to Swayambhunath.
Pashupatinath restricts entry to the main temple to Hindus; non-Hindu visitors can view permitted parts of the wider complex and riverside. This is a site-specific access rule, distinct from entry to the city’s public squares. Shivaratri brings particularly large pilgrim crowds to Pashupatinath in February or March, depending on the religious calendar. The Nepal Tourism Board publishes separate heritage admission categories, including SAARC rates, so carry the document needed to establish eligibility at ticketed sites. Swayambhunath involves a climb, whereas Boudhanath’s circuit is centred on the stupa at ground level. Pairing those two without considering traffic and the stair ascent can make a short day more demanding than expected. Around Durbar Square, palace courtyards and surrounding streets also require different visiting time.
March to May or October to November, about 10–28°C in the valley.
By Air: Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is about 5 km from central Kathmandu; allow roughly 20–45 minutes by road. Prepaid or booked taxis and local road transport serve the airport.
By Road: Taxis and local buses cover the valley; long-distance buses leave from Kathmandu for other Nepali towns.

Paro deserves more than an overnight stop before a road transfer. Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum sit above the river, while the hike to Taktsang monastery calls for a separate day and an early start. The valley is also the arrival point for most international air visitors to Bhutan. Travellers from India can reach Paro town quickly from the airport, but mountain roads and changing weather make onward travel slower than a flat map suggests.
Paro town is a useful base for Rinpung Dzong, the museum and a valley walk. Accommodation farther along the valley may suit a stay centred on Taktsang, but it changes the daily drive into town. Decide which of these outings matters most before selecting a hotel solely for its valley views.
The National Museum occupies Ta Dzong above Rinpung Dzong. Visiting the museum and fortress area together creates a more coherent route than returning to the same hillside on separate days. In May 2025, a Craft Gallery opened at the National Museum, adding a place to see and purchase work by Bhutanese artisans during the museum visit.
Taktsang is a mountain walk with a substantial climb, not a quick extension of the town circuit. Give it a dedicated day rather than combining it with the road transfer to Thimphu. The capital is about 54 kilometres from the airport, while Paro town is only about six kilometres away, so the two arrival plans have quite different demands.
Kyichu Lhakhang and Drukgyel Dzong give another direction to a valley outing. Group these with accommodation on that side of Paro rather than repeatedly travelling through town. A night in Paro before or after Thimphu also makes room for the museum and riverside setting beyond the airport transfer.
March to May or September to November, about 8–22°C, for valley walks.
By Air: Paro International Airport (PBH) is about 6 km from Paro town; a road transfer commonly takes around 15 minutes. Thimphu is about 54 km away by road.
