Kathmandu rewards slow movement between its heritage areas. Durbar Square contains palace courtyards and temples, Swayambhunath rises west of the old centre, and Boudhanath is a separate stupa district. Pashupatinath draws Hindu pilgrims from India. Road traffic and narrow lanes mean that a short map distance can take time, so group two nearby sites rather than rushing across the whole valley. Tribhuvan International Airport sits close to the city by distance, but the drive still needs a margin.
Thamel is useful for restaurants, trekking services and a walk towards Kathmandu Durbar Square. A stay around Boudhanath instead favours the stupa neighbourhood and the eastern side of the city. Patan and Bhaktapur have their own heritage centres across the valley, so they need separate plans rather than being treated as adjacent sections of Kathmandu’s Durbar Square. Tribhuvan Airport is on the eastern side, which can make Boudhanath or Pashupatinath a more logical first outing than a cross-city drive to Swayambhunath.
Pashupatinath restricts entry to the main temple to Hindus; non-Hindu visitors can view permitted parts of the wider complex and riverside. This is a site-specific access rule, distinct from entry to the city’s public squares. Shivaratri brings particularly large pilgrim crowds to Pashupatinath in February or March, depending on the religious calendar. The Nepal Tourism Board publishes separate heritage admission categories, including SAARC rates, so carry the document needed to establish eligibility at ticketed sites. Swayambhunath involves a climb, whereas Boudhanath’s circuit is centred on the stupa at ground level. Pairing those two without considering traffic and the stair ascent can make a short day more demanding than expected. Around Durbar Square, palace courtyards and surrounding streets also require different visiting time.
March to May or October to November, about 10–28°C in the valley.
By Air: Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is about 5 km from central Kathmandu; allow roughly 20–45 minutes by road. Prepaid or booked taxis and local road transport serve the airport.
By Road: Taxis and local buses cover the valley; long-distance buses leave from Kathmandu for other Nepali towns.

Kunming is often a gateway to wider Yunnan, but its own streets justify a slower start. Green Lake Park is close to older neighbourhoods, and Yuantong Temple gives a quieter stop within the urban core. The Stone Forest is outside the city and needs a separate excursion. Travellers from India can use the airport metro, though reaching a central hotel may require a line change. Keep the airport and railway station names distinct when planning onward travel.
Green Lake is a useful base for a first visit focused on older Kunming, with Yuantong Temple and central neighbourhood walks forming a manageable programme. A hotel chosen for Kunming South railway station serves a different purpose and places the emphasis on an onward train rather than the older urban core. Keep that distinction in mind when dividing nights between Kunming and other Yunnan destinations.
Metro Line 6 links Changshui Airport with Tangzixiang through the eastern side of the city. East Bus Station is an interchange on this route, not the only possible end point for an airport journey. Use the station nearest the hotel to decide where to change. Kunming Station and Kunming South are also separate railway destinations, so the departure station should be settled before arranging the final transfer.
Put the Stone Forest on a dedicated excursion outside the city. It does not fit naturally between Green Lake and Yuantong Temple, even though all three often appear in a short itinerary. Dianchi Lake forms another outing away from the older streets and can become the focus of a separate day. For a brief stop, the Green Lake area and Kunming Old Street give a more compact introduction before taking on those longer trips.
March to May or September to November, about 12–24°C, for parks and excursions.
By Air: Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) is about 25 km northeast of central Kunming; Metro Line 6 connects to the wider network, with many central trips taking 40–60 minutes. Buses and taxis also operate.
By Rail: Kunming and Kunming South stations serve different rail routes; check the exact departure point.
By Road: Airport buses and taxis connect the terminals with city districts; coaches serve wider Yunnan.
