Dammam faces the Gulf, but many of the region’s worthwhile stops are spread across neighbouring cities. A waterfront walk on the Dammam Corniche can be paired with Marjan Island, while Ithra in Dhahran provides galleries, a library and programmes indoors. Al Khobar adds the SciTech centre and another seafront. King Fahd International Airport is a substantial road trip from the city, making the arrival transfer worth arranging before departure from India.
Decide between Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran before choosing accommodation, because a hotel in one does not place the other two within a short walk. Dammam’s Corniche suits a waterfront stay, while Al Khobar works better for its seafront and SciTech. Dhahran is the logical focus for Ithra, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture. Use the full city name in an airport pickup address rather than giving only a hotel brand with branches across the metropolitan area.
Ithra combines a library, museum, cinema and performance spaces, so choose the parts of the programme that interest you instead of treating the entire complex as one quick exhibition. Its museum galleries cover distinct themes including Saudi culture, Islamic art and the Arabian Peninsula’s natural history. A museum-focused half-day there pairs more naturally with Dhahran than with repeated returns to the Dammam waterfront. Marjan Island belongs with a Dammam Corniche outing; SciTech belongs with Al Khobar. King Fahd Airport is outside the built-up coastal area, and the transfer is a road trip rather than a short city hop. For a morning departure, compare the route from the actual hotel district with the central Dammam distance quoted in general airport descriptions. Ithra’s library can anchor a quieter Dhahran afternoon.

Kochi, historically Cochin, has traded pepper and spices through its harbour for centuries, and Arab, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British merchants all left traces on the islands of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. The modern city around Ernakulam runs on the port, the Cochin Shipyard, the Infopark IT campus and a large Gulf remittance economy. Visitors come for the Chinese fishing nets, the lanes of Jew Town, Kathakali performances and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, and use the city as a base for Munnar and the backwaters.
Fort Kochi and Mattancherry suit a heritage stay with walks between the churches, synagogue and waterfront, while Ernakulam near MG Road is better for business, shopping and trains. Kochi Metro runs from Aluva through Edappally and MG Road to Thrippunithura, and the Water Metro and the older state ferries cross the backwater channels between Ernakulam and the islands. KMRL electric feeder buses connect Aluva metro station with the airport.
December to February is dry and comfortable. The south-west monsoon arrives in early June and brings very heavy rain through August, a season many visitors choose for Ayurveda treatment. Onam in August or September is Kerala's harvest festival, and many shops close for the main days. The Paradesi Synagogue is closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays, and visitors should cover shoulders and knees there and in the churches. Book Kathakali shows in Fort Kochi in advance and arrive early to watch the make-up being applied.
December to February, with days of about 23-32°C and low rainfall. June to August brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Cochin International Airport (COK) is at Nedumbassery, about 25 km north-east of the city centre; allow 45-75 minutes by road to Ernakulam and longer to Fort Kochi. KMRL feeder buses link the airport with Aluva metro station, and prepaid taxis, app cabs and KSRTC buses are also available.
By Rail: Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town are the main stations, with Aluva closest to the airport. Vande Bharat trains run to Thiruvananthapuram, Kasaragod and KSR Bengaluru.
By Road: NH 66 runs along the coast to Alappuzha and Kozhikode, and NH 544 heads inland to Thrissur, Palakkad and Coimbatore. KSRTC buses leave from the Vyttila Mobility Hub for most Kerala towns.
