Kochi, historically Cochin, has traded pepper and spices through its harbour for centuries, and Arab, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British merchants all left traces on the islands of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. The modern city around Ernakulam runs on the port, the Cochin Shipyard, the Infopark IT campus and a large Gulf remittance economy. Visitors come for the Chinese fishing nets, the lanes of Jew Town, Kathakali performances and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, and use the city as a base for Munnar and the backwaters.
Fort Kochi and Mattancherry suit a heritage stay with walks between the churches, synagogue and waterfront, while Ernakulam near MG Road is better for business, shopping and trains. Kochi Metro runs from Aluva through Edappally and MG Road to Thrippunithura, and the Water Metro and the older state ferries cross the backwater channels between Ernakulam and the islands. KMRL electric feeder buses connect Aluva metro station with the airport.
December to February is dry and comfortable. The south-west monsoon arrives in early June and brings very heavy rain through August, a season many visitors choose for Ayurveda treatment. Onam in August or September is Kerala's harvest festival, and many shops close for the main days. The Paradesi Synagogue is closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays, and visitors should cover shoulders and knees there and in the churches. Book Kathakali shows in Fort Kochi in advance and arrive early to watch the make-up being applied.
December to February, with days of about 23-32°C and low rainfall. June to August brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Cochin International Airport (COK) is at Nedumbassery, about 25 km north-east of the city centre; allow 45-75 minutes by road to Ernakulam and longer to Fort Kochi. KMRL feeder buses link the airport with Aluva metro station, and prepaid taxis, app cabs and KSRTC buses are also available.
By Rail: Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town are the main stations, with Aluva closest to the airport. Vande Bharat trains run to Thiruvananthapuram, Kasaragod and KSR Bengaluru.
By Road: NH 66 runs along the coast to Alappuzha and Kozhikode, and NH 544 heads inland to Thrissur, Palakkad and Coimbatore. KSRTC buses leave from the Vyttila Mobility Hub for most Kerala towns.

Cochin International Airport (COK). Terminal 1 handles domestic flights and Terminal 3 handles international flights. Terminal 2 is used for business aviation.
Male has a different pace from the resort islands often associated with the Maldives. The National Museum and Sultan Park sit close together, while the fish market and waterfront show the working capital. Hukuru Miskiy is a coral-stone mosque with access rules to check before visiting. Velana International Airport is on neighbouring Hulhulé, linked by ferry and road to the city. A visitor arriving from India should establish whether the next transfer goes to Male, Hulhumalé, a speedboat jetty or a seaplane terminal.
Choose Male for a stay centred on the National Museum, Sultan Park and the working waterfront. Hulhumalé offers a different base near the airport island, while an island resort may require a speedboat or seaplane connection arranged through the property. These transfer types are not interchangeable: a taxi into the capital will not replace a resort boat booking. Give the accommodation its flight details so the onward pickup is tied to the correct arrival.
Velana’s new Terminal 1 opened in July 2025 for international operations. Domestic flights use Terminal 2, and seaplanes operate from a separate facility, so a connection can involve moving between different parts of the airport. The Sinamalé Bridge provides a road link from the airport island to Male, alongside water transport options. In the capital, the fish market and nearby waterfront suit a working-city walk rather than a resort-beach plan. Hukuru Miskiy is an active mosque with controlled access, so its visit should be arranged through the appropriate local permission rather than assumed from a general sightseeing map. The museum and Sultan Park can be paired before a waterfront walk. For a short stop between flights, the useful question is whether the next departure is international, domestic or seaplane, because each points to a different return location.
December to April, usually about 26–31°C, with a comparatively drier season.
By Air: Velana International Airport (MLE) is on Hulhulé beside Male; the ferry crossing is usually about 10 minutes. Buses, taxis and speedboats serve different capital and resort destinations.

Velana International Airport (MLE). Velana Terminal 1 handles international flights, while Terminal 2 handles domestic services. Seaplane departures use a separate terminal, so onward resort transfers may require a ground connection.
