Bangkok is best explored by pairing nearby places and leaving travel time between districts. The Grand Palace and Wat Pho make one riverside day; Chinatown works well for an evening; and the Jim Thompson House brings a different museum setting near the city centre. Boats on the Chao Phraya River can be useful transport as well as a way to see the banks. Suvarnabhumi Airport has an Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai, where travellers can connect with the urban network.
Phaya Thai is convenient for an airport-rail arrival, while a riverside hotel works better for repeated visits around Wat Pho and the Grand Palace. Sukhumvit offers a different base focused on shopping and the urban railway. From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link terminates at Phaya Thai, where a separate BTS connection continues towards other districts; Makkasan is another interchange option for the MRT. Keep the airport ticket distinct from tickets for the city networks.
The Grand Palace requires clothing that covers shoulders and legs; its entry rules are stricter than those of a shopping centre, so choose the day’s clothing for the palace itself. Wat Pho and a river crossing to Wat Arun make a coherent old-city route. The Jim Thompson House fits better with the Siam area than between those temple visits. In September 2025, Central Park shopping centre opened beside Lumpini Park, giving the Silom area another dining stop after a park walk. Songkran falls in April and can turn central roads into water-festival zones, particularly around Silom. If the boarding pass points to the SAT-1 satellite at Suvarnabhumi, follow the airport’s automated people-mover signs after departure formalities rather than seeking a separate roadside terminal entrance.
November to February, usually about 21–32°C, with less oppressive heat.
By Air: Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is about 25 km east of central Bangkok; allow roughly 30–60 minutes by road. Airport Rail Link trains run to Phaya Thai; buses and taxis are also available.
By Rail: Phaya Thai connects the Airport Rail Link with the BTS; Krung Thep Aphiwat is a major intercity rail terminal.
By Road: Airport buses and taxis serve the centre; intercity coaches depart from Bangkok bus terminals.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). Suvarnabhumi’s main terminal handles check-in, while the SAT-1 satellite provides additional boarding gates reached by an automated people mover. The boarding pass determines whether a flight uses the satellite, including services to India.
Colombo is often the first Sri Lankan stop after landing at Bandaranaike International Airport near Katunayake. Pettah’s market streets, the Gangaramaya temple and Galle Face Green show different parts of the city within a compact area, although road traffic changes the pace. The National Museum adds an indoor visit, and Colombo Fort remains an important transport point. Indian travellers can spend a day here before taking a train south or beginning a wider island route.
Fort is the practical choice when a rail departure forms part of a short stay; Galle Face instead puts the seafront within easy reach. Cinnamon Gardens suits the National Museum and Independence Square. Bandaranaike Airport is at Katunayake, outside Colombo, so an airport hotel and a central city hotel serve different purposes. A late arrival followed by an early flight may favour the airport area, whereas a day of sightseeing needs the road transfer into Colombo itself.
Pettah and Fort fit together as a market-and-architecture walk, while Gangaramaya and the nearby lake area belong to another circuit. The National Museum is a collection visit rather than a brief stop on the way to a train, so pair it with Cinnamon Gardens. Galle Face Green is a flexible evening endpoint after those indoor sights. City of Dreams Sri Lanka opened in August 2025, adding hotel, dining and entertainment facilities to the central waterfront area; it is separate from the older museum district. For onward rail travel, identify Colombo Fort station on the ticket rather than treating every Colombo station as interchangeable. Pettah’s commercial lanes can be awkward with wheeled luggage, making Fort accommodation useful when combining a market visit with an onward train.
December to March, around 23–32°C, with comparatively drier west-coast weather.
By Air: Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 32 km north of Colombo; allow roughly 45–75 minutes by road. Airport bus 187, taxis and hired cars connect with the city.
By Rail: Colombo Fort is the main rail hub for routes towards Kandy, Galle and other destinations.
By Road: Airport bus 187 uses the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway; long-distance buses leave from city terminals.
