Bengaluru grew from a garrison and textile town into the headquarters of India's software export industry, and it also hosts Hindustan Aeronautics, the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Indian Institute of Science. The city sits about 900 metres above sea level, which keeps evenings mild for much of the year. Visitors come for Lalbagh and Cubbon Park, the palaces of the Wodeyar and Tipu Sultan eras, a large brewpub and cafe scene, and weekend drives to Nandi Hills.
For a short stay, MG Road, Indiranagar and the streets around Cubbon Park are central and sit on the Purple Line, but if your work is in Whitefield or Electronic City, stay close to it, because cross-city traffic can take well over an hour at peak times. BMRCL sells QR tickets through its app and on WhatsApp as well as travel cards. App cabs and auto-rickshaws are widely used; ask for the meter or use the app fare.
The weather is most comfortable from October to February. The south-west monsoon brings steady rain from June to September, and October and November can bring short, heavy downpours. The Lalbagh flower shows around Republic Day in January and Independence Day in August draw large crowds. Karaga, a night-long festival centred on the Dharmaraya Swamy Temple, falls in March or April. Remove footwear and dress modestly at temples such as the Bull Temple in Basavanagudi, and expect a separate camera charge at Bangalore Palace.

Goa was a Portuguese colony for about 450 years until 1961, and the churches and convents of Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, date from that period. Mining, pharmaceuticals and fishing matter to the local economy, but tourism shapes daily life along the coast from Arambol in the north to Palolem in the south. Visitors come for the beaches, the Latin Quarter of Fontainhas in Panaji, spice farms around Ponda and the Carnival held before Lent.
Check which airport your flight uses before choosing a stay. For a short trip, Panaji and the belt from Candolim to Baga keep you near most sights. Goa has no metro or city rail. Travellers rely on taxis, the government-backed GoaMiles app, rented scooters and Kadamba buses, so budget for road transfers. November to February is peak season, with Christmas and New Year week the busiest and most expensive. Carnival falls in February or March, and the Feast of St Francis Xavier draws pilgrims to Old Goa on 3 December. From June to September the monsoon closes many beach shacks and makes the sea unsafe for swimming, so watch for the lifeguards' red flags. Dress modestly at the Basilica of Bom Jesus and other churches, with shoulders and knees covered, and keep beachwear for the beach. The monsoon months, though wet, are when the waterfalls and paddy fields of the interior are at their fullest.
