Bengaluru grew from a garrison and textile town into the headquarters of India's software export industry, and it also hosts Hindustan Aeronautics, the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Indian Institute of Science. The city sits about 900 metres above sea level, which keeps evenings mild for much of the year. Visitors come for Lalbagh and Cubbon Park, the palaces of the Wodeyar and Tipu Sultan eras, a large brewpub and cafe scene, and weekend drives to Nandi Hills.
For a short stay, MG Road, Indiranagar and the streets around Cubbon Park are central and sit on the Purple Line, but if your work is in Whitefield or Electronic City, stay close to it, because cross-city traffic can take well over an hour at peak times. BMRCL sells QR tickets through its app and on WhatsApp as well as travel cards. App cabs and auto-rickshaws are widely used; ask for the meter or use the app fare.
The weather is most comfortable from October to February. The south-west monsoon brings steady rain from June to September, and October and November can bring short, heavy downpours. The Lalbagh flower shows around Republic Day in January and Independence Day in August draw large crowds. Karaga, a night-long festival centred on the Dharmaraya Swamy Temple, falls in March or April. Remove footwear and dress modestly at temples such as the Bull Temple in Basavanagudi, and expect a separate camera charge at Bangalore Palace.
October to February, with days of about 15-28°C. June to September is rainy but rarely very hot.

Bhubaneswar replaced Cuttack as Odisha's capital after 1948, and its planned grid was laid out by the German architect Otto Koenigsberger next to an old town where hundreds of Kalinga-style temples survive. The economy rests on government, education, IT parks and the mining and metals trade of the state. Visitors come for the Lingaraj and Mukteshwar temples and the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, and use the city as the base for the Jagannath Temple at Puri and the Sun Temple at Konark, both within about 65 km.
Hotels around Janpath, Saheed Nagar and Jaydev Vihar are central and close to the airport. There is no metro yet; the Mo Bus network run by the Capital Region Urban Transport covers the city and runs to Cuttack and Puri, and app cabs and auto-rickshaws are easy to find. Many visitors stay in Bhubaneswar and see Puri and Konark on day trips along the Marine Drive, while others base themselves in Puri for the beach. Chilika Lake, about 100 km south-west, needs a full day.
October to February is the most comfortable season. April to June is hot and humid, and cyclones can reach the coast in May and again in October and November. The Rath Yatra at Puri in June or July draws huge numbers of pilgrims and fills hotels across the region. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the Lingaraj Temple, but a viewing platform beside the compound wall gives a look inside; the same rule applies at the Jagannath Temple in Puri. The Konark Dance Festival is held each December with the Sun Temple as its backdrop. Ekamra Haat near the Kalpana Square area sells Odisha handlooms such as Sambalpuri and Bomkai.
