Bagdogra is a small town beside an Indian Air Force station, but its airport serves one of India's busiest tourist corridors, running through Siliguri to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Gangtok and the forests of the Dooars. Siliguri, about 12 km away, is the trading hub of the narrow Siliguri Corridor that links the North-East with the rest of India, and it handles tea, timber and trade with Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Travellers arrive here for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, tea estates, monasteries and views of Kangchenjunga.
Few travellers stay in Bagdogra itself; Siliguri has the most hotels for a night before or after a flight, and Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok are three to five hours away by road. Shared and reserved jeeps and taxis to the hills leave from Siliguri and from outside the airport, and fares for reserved cars are best agreed before departure. Indian visitors need no permit for Gangtok but do for North Sikkim and Nathu La, and foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit for Sikkim, which can be issued at the Sikkim tourism counter at Bagdogra airport, in Siliguri or at the Rangpo checkpost.
October to December gives the clearest mountain views, and March to May brings rhododendrons and mild weather in the hills. The monsoon, from June to September, is very wet, and landslides often close NH 10 to Sikkim, so keep a spare day before a flight home. Winter nights in Darjeeling fall close to freezing. Darjeeling tea is plucked in flushes, and the spring first flush in March and April is the most prized. The Darjeeling toy train runs from New Jalpaiguri as well as on the shorter joyride between Darjeeling and Ghum, and seats should be reserved in advance.
October to December for clear Himalayan views and March to May for mild weather, with hill-station days of about 8-20°C. June to September is very wet.
By Air: Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is about 12 km south-west of Siliguri; allow 30 minutes to Siliguri, about three hours to Darjeeling and four to five hours to Gangtok. Prepaid taxis and shared vehicles to the hills are available outside the terminal.
By Rail: New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri is the main railhead, with Siliguri Junction nearby. Vande Bharat trains run from New Jalpaiguri to Howrah and Guwahati, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway starts here.
By Road: NH 10 follows the Teesta valley to Sikkim, and the Hill Cart Road climbs to Darjeeling. SNT and NBSTC buses leave from the Tenzing Norgay Central Bus Terminus in Siliguri.

Guwahati is the commercial hub of Assam and the transit point for most of the North-East, with an oil refinery at Noonmati, a large tea auction centre and the state capital at Dispur within its limits. Its airport and railway stations carry much of the traffic bound for Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Visitors come for the Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill, river cruises on the Brahmaputra, Assamese thalis and silk from nearby Sualkuchi, and as the starting point for Kaziranga National Park.
Paltan Bazaar, Fancy Bazaar and GS Road are central for a short stay and close to the railway station and bus operators. There is no metro; app cabs, auto-rickshaws and city buses cover the city, and shared taxis to Shillong leave from Paltan Bazaar. Indian visitors to Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland need an Inner Line Permit, which can be applied for online before travel, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for Arunachal.
October to April is the drier season, with cool nights from December to February. The monsoon, from May or June to September, brings heavy rain and occasional flooding along the Brahmaputra, and Kaziranga closes to safaris in these months. The Ambubachi Mela in June shuts the Kamakhya Temple for three days and brings very large crowds when it reopens. Bihu in mid-April and mid-January is Assam's main festival. Queues at Kamakhya can take hours; a paid faster queue is available, and footwear is left at the base of the shrine.
October to April, with days of about 10-28°C. May to September is hot and humid with heavy rain.
