Shanghai is organised around the Huangpu River. The Bund looks across to Pudong’s towers, while Yuyuan Garden and nearby streets offer a different scale of buildings and shops. Museums and former lane neighbourhoods fill out a longer stay. Pudong International Airport is well east of central districts, so arriving visitors should decide whether a hotel is near People’s Square, the Bund or a metro interchange before choosing a transfer. The airport metro is useful, but its travel time is longer than the map may suggest.
People’s Square is useful for central metro connections, while the Bund suits a stay focused on the historic riverfront. A Pudong hotel places the towers on the same side of the Huangpu as the airport, but the district is large and the final station still matters. The Maglev reaches Longyang Road rather than the Bund itself; onward metro or road transport is needed. Metro Line 2 offers another route from Pudong Airport into the city.
Air India checks in at Terminal 2, at island K. The airport’s other terminal is a separate check-in building, and a domestic connection may require collecting bags and completing new departure formalities. Hongqiao is a different Shanghai airport, not another Pudong terminal. In town, the Bund promenade and a Pudong observation visit face each other across the river but need a crossing between them. Yuyuan Garden belongs to a smaller-scale old-city route, while People’s Square museums form another cluster. Museum of Art Pudong is on the newer waterfront side and has its own exhibition tickets. For a short visit, select one river crossing and build the day around the sights on either bank rather than repeatedly returning to the same metro interchange. Pudong Airport’s distance makes the last transfer a meaningful part of the departure day.
March to May or September to November, about 12–25°C, for riverside walks.
By Air: Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is about 30 km east of downtown; Metro Line 2 takes about one hour to People’s Square. Airport Link rail, buses and taxis are alternatives.

By Road: Airport buses and taxis connect Pudong with central districts and the wider region.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). Air India operates from Pudong Terminal 2, with check-in at island K. Both main terminals handle domestic and international operations, so flight type alone does not identify the correct building.
Melbourne’s centre is organised on a grid, making it easy to pair Federation Square with nearby galleries and the Yarra riverfront. Queen Victoria Market and the Royal Botanic Gardens deserve separate outings rather than a hurried loop. Tram routes cover the inner city, while trains open coastal and regional day trips. Indian travellers often have relatives or university appointments here, so a flexible plan is useful. Melbourne Airport has no passenger rail station; the express bus reaches Southern Cross, where city trains and trams connect.
Southern Cross is convenient for a SkyBus arrival, while a stay nearer Flinders Street suits Federation Square and the river. Melbourne Airport still requires a road transfer; the Metro Tunnel is a city railway project, not an airport rail link. A hotel near the central tram network can simplify the final leg after the express bus.
The Free Tram Zone covers a defined central area, so check the boundary before riding towards the Royal Botanic Gardens or farther suburbs. Queen Victoria Market belongs to the northern side of the centre, while the gardens sit across the river from the main grid. The Metro Tunnel’s Town Hall and State Library stations connect with established central stations, and Anzac gives the St Kilda Road area another rail access point. At the airport, international flights use Terminal 2, while domestic airlines use other terminals. An onward flight within Australia therefore needs the domestic terminal indicated by the carrier, even when both legs appear on one booking.
March to May or September to November, roughly 11–24°C, for parks and streets.
