Riyadh is spread over a wide area, so choosing a few linked stops works better than trying to cross it repeatedly. The National Museum and Al Masmak Fortress introduce different periods of Saudi history; Diriyah, west of the centre, shows Najdi building traditions. Kingdom Centre supplies a city view. King Khalid International Airport is north of town, and the Yellow metro line gives some travellers an alternative to the road trip.
Olaya is useful for a stay centred on offices and Kingdom Centre, while Diriyah requires a separate western excursion. The National Museum and Al Masmak Fortress belong to the older southern part of Riyadh, so grouping them reduces repeated cross-city transfers. The Yellow metro line provides an airport link, but a final interchange or road connection may still be necessary for the hotel.
Airport terminal advice published before February 2026 can point passengers to the wrong building. Match the airline’s updated terminal to the relevant metro stop or taxi destination. Terminals 1 and 2 handle Saudi carriers’ international operations; Terminals 3 and 4 serve their domestic flights. A domestic connection can therefore involve a change of building even when the same carrier operates both legs. Diriyah’s At-Turaif heritage area and dining district have their own booking arrangements, so select the intended attraction rather than assuming one admission covers the entire development. Plan the outdoor heritage visit separately from an indoor National Museum afternoon.
November to March, roughly 10–28°C, for outdoor districts.
By Air: King Khalid International Airport (RUH) is about 35 km north of central Riyadh; road trips often take 30–45 minutes. Yellow Line metro stations, taxis and app-based cars serve the airport.
By Rail: Riyadh Metro Yellow Line links airport terminals with King Abdullah Financial District; other lines meet across the network.
By Road: Intercity coaches and highways connect Riyadh with other Saudi cities; taxis cover long cross-town trips.

King Khalid International Airport (RUH). Following the February 2026 reassignment, Terminals 1 and 2 serve Saudi airlines’ international flights, Terminals 3 and 4 their domestic services, and Terminal 5 foreign airlines’ international flights. Indian airlines are foreign carriers in Saudi Arabia, so their Riyadh flights use Terminal 5.
Lucknow became the capital of the Nawabs of Awadh in the late 18th century, and their buildings, from the Bara Imambara to the Rumi Darwaza, still define the old city along the Gomti. The modern economy rests on state administration, education, healthcare, handicrafts and a growing services sector. Visitors come for kebabs and biryani in Chowk and Aminabad, chikankari shopping, the ruins of the Residency from the 1857 siege, and road trips to Ayodhya, about 135 km east.
Hazratganj, the central shopping street, suits a short stay, while Gomti Nagar is better placed for offices and newer hotels. Lucknow Metro's Red Line runs from the airport through Charbagh station and Hazratganj to Munshi Pulia, so the airport is on the metro. The 63 km expressway to Kanpur, inaugurated on 13 July 2026 and opened to traffic the next day, has cut the drive between the two cities to well under an hour; it has no toll booths and collects tolls through FASTag and number-plate cameras. Charbagh station, a red-brick building completed in 1914, is worth a look even if you are not catching a train.
October to March is the most comfortable season, though December and January bring dense fog that often delays early flights and trains. May and June are very hot. Muharram processions pass through the old city, and the Lucknow Mahotsav is held in the winter months. The Bara Imambara ticket includes the Bhool Bhulaiya maze and the Shahi Baoli stepwell; remove your shoes and dress modestly inside the complex. For food, the kebab shops of Chowk and Aminabad are busiest in the evening, and many close by late night. Chikankari prices vary widely with the quality of the embroidery, so compare a few shops before buying.
October to March, with days of about 8-28°C; December and January bring dense morning fog. May and June often pass 42°C.
By Air: Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (LKO) at Amausi is about 14 km south-west of the city centre; allow 30-45 minutes by road. The Red Line metro station in front of Terminal 2 runs to Charbagh and Hazratganj, and prepaid taxis and app cabs serve both terminals.
By Rail: Lucknow Charbagh and Lucknow Junction stand side by side, and Gomti Nagar handles some trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Gorakhpur and Patna, and the Shatabdi and Lucknow Mail run to New Delhi.
By Road: The Agra-Lucknow Expressway runs west towards Agra and Delhi, the Purvanchal Expressway east towards Ghazipur, and the new expressway south-west to Kanpur. UPSRTC buses leave from the Alambagh bus terminal.
