Patna occupies the site of Pataliputra, capital of the Mauryan and Gupta empires, and remains the administrative and commercial centre of Bihar. Its economy runs on government, trade, education and services, and many families have members working in other states, so flights and trains fill up around Chhath and Diwali. Visitors come for the Bihar Museum and Takht Sri Patna Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, and use the city as the gateway to Nalanda, Rajgir, Vaishali and Bodh Gaya.
Fraser Road, Boring Road and the area around Gandhi Maidan are central for a short stay and close to the museums. App cabs, auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws are the usual way around, as the metro so far covers only a short stretch on the eastern side of the city. The airport runway is short, so only narrow-body aircraft fly here.
October to March is the best season. December and January bring dense fog that delays morning flights and trains, and May and June are very hot. Chhath Puja, six days after Diwali, fills the ghats along the Ganga and makes travel into Patna very busy. The Bihar Museum is closed on Mondays. At Takht Sri Patna Sahib, cover your head, remove your shoes and wash your feet before entering; the community kitchen serves langar to all visitors.

By Air: Jay Prakash Narayan Airport (PAT) is about 6 km south-west of Gandhi Maidan; allow 20-30 minutes by road. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and auto-rickshaws serve the terminal.
By Rail: Patna Junction, Rajendra Nagar Terminal, Patliputra and Danapur are the main stations. Vande Bharat trains run to Lucknow, Howrah and Ranchi, and Rajdhani services link Patna with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mahatma Gandhi Setu and the newer JP Setu cross the Ganga to north Bihar, and a highway runs south to Gaya and Bodh Gaya. BSRTC and private buses leave from the Patliputra Bus Terminal at Bairiya.

Jay Prakash Narayan Airport, Patna (PAT). The new terminal, in use since 3 June 2025, handles all passenger flights. A short runway limits the airport to narrow-body aircraft.
Ranchi became the capital of Jharkhand when the state was formed in 2000, and it had long served as the summer seat of the Bihar government because of its milder climate. The region's coal and iron ore sustain public-sector firms such as Central Coalfields and the Heavy Engineering Corporation, both headquartered here. Visitors come for the waterfalls where the Subarnarekha and its tributaries drop off the plateau, the hilltop Jagannath Temple, tribal culture and the lakes around the city.
Main Road, Lalpur and the area around Firayalal Chowk are central for a short stay, while Kanke and Morabadi are quieter. There is no metro; app cabs, auto-rickshaws and city buses cover the city. The 4.18 km Ratu Road elevated corridor, inaugurated in July 2025, has eased the drive from the centre towards Ratu and the north-western suburbs. The airport is only about 5 km from the centre, so late-evening arrivals are easy. For the waterfalls, hire a car for the day, since public transport to Hundru, Dassam and Jonha is sparse and the roads wind through forest.
October to March is the best time to visit, and the waterfalls are fullest just after the monsoon in September and October, when the paths can be slippery. Summers are milder than on the Gangetic plains, but May can still pass 40°C. The Jagannath Temple holds its own Rath Yatra in June or July, and the tribal festivals of Sarhul in spring and Karma in late summer bring dancing to villages across the region. Swimming below the falls is dangerous; stay at the marked viewing points. Hundru and Dassam both involve several hundred steps down to the base, so wear good shoes.

By Air: Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) at Hinoo is about 5 km from the city centre; allow 15-25 minutes by road. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and auto-rickshaws serve the terminal.
By Rail: Ranchi Junction is the main station, and Hatia handles some long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Howrah and Patna, and the Rajdhani connects Ranchi with New Delhi.
By Road: Highways run north to Hazaribagh and Patna and south-east to Jamshedpur. Intercity buses leave from the Birsa Munda bus terminal at Khadgarha.
