Chennai, called Madras until 1996, is one of India's largest metropolitan areas, with car plants along the Sriperumbudur and Oragadam belt, a busy container port and a large share of the country's medical travel. Its December music and dance season is the biggest event in the Carnatic calendar. Visitors use the city as the gateway to the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram, the silk and temple town of Kanchipuram and the former French enclave of Puducherry along the East Coast Road.
For a short trip, Egmore, Nungambakkam and T. Nagar are central and well served by the metro, while Mylapore and Besant Nagar put you close to the older temples and the beach. Chennai Metro's Blue Line runs from the airport through the city to Chennai Central, and the Green Line links Chennai Central with St. Thomas Mount via Koyambedu. South India's first air-conditioned suburban train started on the Beach to Chengalpattu line in April 2025, and the older suburban trains and MTC buses are inexpensive but crowded at peak hours. App cabs and auto-rickshaws fill the gaps.
The weather is kindest from November to February. The north-east monsoon brings most of Chennai's rain in October and November, and cyclones in those months can disrupt flights and flood roads. The Margazhi music and dance season runs through December into January, with concerts at sabhas across Mylapore and T. Nagar, and Pongal in mid-January closes many offices for several days. At the Kapaleeshwarar Temple and other Hindu temples, remove footwear and dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. Marina Beach is for walking rather than swimming, as the currents are strong. For Mahabalipuram, leave early to see the Shore Temple before the midday heat, and combine it with the Pancha Rathas and Arjuna's Penance nearby.

By Air: Chennai International Airport (MAA) is at Tirusulam, about 21 km south-west of the city centre; allow 45-75 minutes by road. The Blue Line metro stops at the airport, Tirusulam suburban station is linked to the terminals, and MTC buses, prepaid taxis and app cabs are available.
By Rail: Chennai Central (MGR Central) and Chennai Egmore are the main terminals. Vande Bharat trains run to Mysuru via Bengaluru, to Coimbatore and to Tirunelveli, and the Tamil Nadu Express links Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The East Coast Road leads to Mahabalipuram and Puducherry, and NH 48 runs west to Bengaluru. TNSTC and SETC buses for the southern districts leave from the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam.

Saint Denis is a useful first stop before exploring the rest of Réunion. The Barachois seafront, Rue de Paris and Jardin de l’État can be linked in one central walk, while the Natural History Museum adds a quieter indoor visit. Markets offer a view of the island’s food and crafts. Travellers from India should plan entry rules specifically for Réunion, since it is a French overseas territory with visa arrangements distinct from mainland Schengen travel. The airport lies close to town but traffic can slow the approach.
A central address around Rue de Paris is a practical base for a first night on the island. It places the architectural walk and museums closer than a hotel chosen only for road access to the airport. The Barachois is the seafront end of this city route, while Jardin de l'État forms a natural inland destination.
Maison Carrère on Rue de Paris houses the tourism office and exhibitions inside a nineteenth-century residence. Begin there for an introduction to the built heritage, then continue towards the Léon Dierx Museum and the garden. The Natural History Museum stands within Jardin de l'État, so these two stops fit together without a separate cross-city transfer.
Grand Marché adds a craft-shopping visit to the central itinerary. Keep the market and Rue de Paris walk together before setting off on a longer island drive. Saint Denis is a useful arrival stop, but a hotel here does not put the western beach resorts or mountain walking areas next door.
Roland Garros Airport connects to town by road and public transport. An arrival followed by the central architectural route is manageable without committing immediately to a circuit of Réunion. Collecting a car for the island portion after the city stay can also simplify how the first evening is organised.
