Hyderabad was founded by the Qutb Shahi dynasty in 1591 and later ruled by the Nizams, whose wealth paid for palaces such as Chowmahalla and Falaknuma. The modern economy runs on software, biotech and drug manufacturing, centred on HITEC City, Gachibowli and Genome Valley, while the old city south of the Musi keeps its pearl and bangle markets. Visitors come for Charminar, Golconda Fort, the Salar Jung Museum and the food of the old city, from biryani to haleem during Ramzan.
For a business trip, stay in HITEC City, Gachibowli or Madhapur, close to the offices; Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills sit between the IT district and the old city and suit a mixed trip. Hyderabad Metro's three lines connect Miyapur, LB Nagar, Nagole, Raidurg and the Secunderabad area, and a metro smart card saves time at ticket counters. App cabs and auto-rickshaws are easy to find. The airport is not on the metro, so the Pushpak airport buses or a cab are the usual links. For shopping, the pearl shops of Pathergatti near Charminar and the bangle stalls of Laad Bazaar are busiest after dark.
October to February is the most comfortable season. April and May are hot, often near 40°C, and the monsoon brings rain from June to September. During Ramzan the lanes around Charminar stay open late for haleem and street food, while Bonalu in July and August and Ganesh Chaturthi bring processions that can close roads for hours. Chowmahalla Palace and the Salar Jung Museum are both closed on Fridays. Mecca Masjid, beside Charminar, expects modest dress, and women should carry a scarf. For Golconda, arrive in the late afternoon, climb to the top before sunset and stay for the evening sound and light show in the fort.
October to February, with days of about 15-30°C. April and May are hot and dry, often near 40°C.
By Air: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) is at Shamshabad, about 24 km south of the city; the PV Narasimha Rao Expressway brings the drive to Mehdipatnam down to roughly 30-40 minutes outside peak hours, and HITEC City takes longer. TGSRTC Pushpak buses link the airport with Secunderabad, HITEC City and other areas, and app cabs and taxis wait outside arrivals.
By Rail: Secunderabad, Hyderabad (Nampally), Kacheguda and Charlapalli are the main stations. Vande Bharat trains run to Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Bengaluru.
By Road: NH 44 runs north to Nagpur and south to Bengaluru, and NH 65 east to Vijayawada. TGSRTC and APSRTC buses leave from the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station and the Jubilee Bus Station.

Ahmedabad was founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah and grew rich on textiles, which earned it the old nickname of the Manchester of the East. In 2017 its walled city became the first Indian city on the UNESCO World Heritage List, protecting the carved wooden houses of its pol neighbourhoods and mosques such as Sidi Saiyyed. The economy now spans chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cars and finance at nearby GIFT City. Visitors come for the Sabarmati Ashram, the riverfront, stepwells and Gujarati thalis.
For a short stay, Ashram Road and Navrangpura are central and close to the metro, while hotels near Lal Darwaja and Khadia suit a trip built around the old city. The metro's east-west and north-south lines cross at Old High Court, and the Janmarg BRTS buses run on dedicated lanes. Gujarat is a dry state: liquor is sold only against a permit, which visitors from outside the state can obtain at some licensed hotel shops on showing identity documents.
November to February is the season for walking the old city. Uttarayan on 14 January fills the rooftops with kite flyers, and Navratri in September or October brings nine nights of garba across the city and heavy demand for hotels. The municipal heritage walk starts early in the morning from the Swaminarayan Temple in Kalupur. Dress modestly at the Jama Masjid and the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque; women are not allowed inside the prayer hall at Sidi Saiyyed.
